Chapter 60:
“I wanted to be somewhere else. Somewhere quiet.” I lay there with my back turned to him, my throat rough.
He stayed silent for a long stretch, then walked over and placed the card beside the bed.
“Take this. There’s no limit on it.” His tone slipped back into that same distant, high-handed calm. “You’ve been through a lot lately. Think of it as compensation. After this ends, we’ll still have to see each other at the company. I hope you can handle it properly and stop making trouble.”
Compensation. With him, it always came down to compensation.
“Fine. I’ll keep the card.” I shut my eyes and let the last tear sink into the pillow. “You can leave now.”
At last, I understood.
To him, my pain, my dignity, and even the life I had nearly lost were all things that could be priced.

The love I wanted was something he could never give me.
Lianne’s POV:
At eight sharp, I opened my eyes.
In the mirror, pale shadows hung beneath my eyes. I smoothed concealer over them with care, then finished with a striking coat of deep red lipstick.
When I went downstairs, Ethan was nowhere in sight, but I did not care.
After breakfast, I made my way to where we were supposed to meet.
Even from afar, I saw my best friend, Tracy Marshall, waving at me like she could barely contain herself.
“Honey, have you been sneaking supplements without telling me?” The second we met, Tracy circled around me, her eyes dropping to the faint swell at my waist. She lifted one brow in suspicion. “You look… a little fuller?”
My heart gave a sudden jolt. Without thinking, I drew my coat more tightly around myself.
“Maybe life is easier when I don’t have to waste energy worrying about Ethan.” I let out a light, forced laugh and pulled her toward the entrance of the mall. “Come on. I’m not holding back today. We’re going to run his card dry.”
We made straight for the clothing section on the third floor.
The saleswoman was almost too eager, guiding us toward the priciest dresses from the new season.
Tracy and I each picked out two dresses and went into separate fitting rooms.
“Lianne, you look unreal in that! That waist, those curves… If I were an Alpha, I’d mark you right now!” Tracy yelled with theatrical excitement from outside the fitting room.
I studied myself in the mirror, then decided to buy both dresses.
At the register, I took out the black card Ethan had handed me the night before.
“Wow, rich girl!” Tracy joked, giving me a playful shove. I laughed and nudged her back, but inside, a cold smile had already formed. This was probably the final luxury I would get to enjoy as the Luna of the Thorn Pack.
After stopping at a few more clothing stores, Tracy pulled me into an upscale jewelry boutique.
“I want to see that new sapphire necklace…”
As Tracy spoke, I stopped dead in my tracks.
There, right by the center display, stood Ethan.
