Chapter 63:
“Oh my God, Lianne.” Tracy shot to her feet in panic and grabbed napkins to wipe me off. “Quick, put it under cold water. It’s already turning red. How can you be this out of it?”
I lowered my eyes to my hand. The skin had reddened at once, and tiny blisters were already beginning to rise.
Oddly enough, I could not feel much pain.
Maybe the hurt inside my chest had already reached its limit, leaving this burn to feel like a strange kind of numb relief.
After losing my wolf, my ability to heal had become painfully slow.
Before, an injury like this would have disappeared in seconds.
Now, it stayed there, ugly and stubborn, like a cruel reminder of what I had lost.
“It’s fine. I’ll go to the restroom and rinse it off,” I said, easing Tracy’s hand aside and giving her a small reassuring smile before walking toward the restroom.
The cold tap water streamed over my swollen hand and carried away some of the heat.
I shut off the faucet and reached for a paper towel, only to go still when a figure appeared in the mirror beside me.

Ivy stood there next to me, staring at me with open hostility.
“Lianne, we need to talk,” she said, her voice heavy with the certainty of someone holding every advantage.
I straightened my sleeves in silence and refused to look at her. “If this is about work, come to the office tomorrow. If this is personal, then I do not think there is anything for us to talk about.”
“Don’t you want to know why Ethan is so set on breaking the bond with you?” Ivy let out a quiet laugh as she stepped closer and lowered her voice. “I only found out a few days ago that you two were already mates. It must have been miserable for you, holding on to a man whose heart was never yours for three whole years.”
I gave a dry, humorless laugh. “Since you know we are mates, then what gives you the right to stand in front of me like this? Are you going to leave him and let us stay together?”
Ivy’s face tightened for the briefest moment, and then she laughed as though I had said something absurdly funny.
“Leave him? Lianne, you really are naive. What does a mate bond even mean? In the wolf world, the echo between souls matters far more than a mate bond ever could. What Ethan and I have is something you will never understand.”
She looked at me with provocation, pity swimming in her eyes. “We understand each other in a way that makes us impossible to replace in each other’s lives. Did you know? Every July, Ethan leaves on a long business trip. He told you it was for company matters, didn’t he?”
My heart lurched so hard it felt as though it had been struck. A wave of dread swallowed me whole. “What are you trying to say?”
