Chapter 69:
Did she truly want to cut ties with me? Or was she just putting on an act so she could leave with Frank? If she meant to walk away, then why did she look at me like that earlier, like she was trying to hold herself together?
Arthur let out a low growl in my mind. He couldn’t stand being pushed aside, and he hated the thought of another man going after our mate.
I pushed myself out of the chair and walked out of the study.
When I reached Lianne’s door, I stopped. My hand lifted, but it hung there for a long moment before I finally knocked.
The door opened almost right away.
A light, fresh scent reached me. There was still a hint of moisture in the air. She had just finished her shower.

Standing by the doorway, she used a towel to dry her damp hair.
A silk robe hung loosely on her frame. The neckline had fallen slightly open, exposing patches of skin that caught the dim light.
Desire hit me without warning. No matter how strained things had become between us, my body still reacted to her in the most instinctive way.
“What is it?” she asked, stopping what she was doing. Her voice carried no warmth.
Her distance pressed down on me. Something inside me tightened, and the urge to pull her close rose up.
I held myself back. I pushed those thoughts down and kept my tone cold. “I want to review the Rejection again. Come to the study.”
Not long after, she took a seat across from me.
I slid the revised document toward her and kept my voice steady. “Once the mate bond is broken, you’ll still need to stay here for the time being. My grandparents can’t find out yet. When needed, you’ll visit them and continue acting as my wife until the right moment to make it known.”
Lianne lowered her eyes and simply listened without interrupting.
“And one more thing,” I added after a brief pause. My finger tapped lightly against the final page of the Rejection. “I adjusted the compensation to five hundred million. The amount will be transferred to your personal account in stages. Think of it as compensation for the past three years.”
Five hundred million. It was enough to make any ordinary werewolf lose their composure.
I expected at least a reaction. Maybe surprise, or even a hint of the warmth she used to show.
Instead, she let out a quiet, self-mocking smile. Her fingers brushed over the number as if it meant nothing.
“Five hundred million. That’s quite generous.” She looked up at me, her eyes empty. “But I have one condition. This arrangement won’t last longer than two months. Within that time, you have to tell your grandparents the truth. After that, we go our separate ways and don’t owe each other anything.”
The way she rushed to distance herself hit me hard. My expression turned cold without me noticing.
Two months. She wouldn’t stay a day longer. Was this because of Frank?
“Fine,” I said through clenched teeth.
