Chapter 70:
She pointed at the section about the property split. Her tone stayed firm. “As for the five hundred million, I don’t want it. Keep the original amount. I don’t need your handout.”
“This isn’t a handout. It’s compensation!” I snapped, unable to keep my voice steady. “I’m the one who broke my word. I couldn’t give you the future you wanted, so you have to accept it.”
I kept pushing the money on her, as if forcing it on her would ease the guilt sitting in my chest.
She met my eyes, calm but tired, like she already understood everything I was trying to hide.
In the end, she didn’t push back. She simply picked up the pen and signed her name.
It was clear she only wanted this over with. Even if she walked away with nothing, as long as she could leave me, that was enough for her.
I printed out two copies, and we signed both in silence.
After that, we each took one.

Without wasting a second, she put her copy away. There was no hesitation in her movements.
She rose from her seat and headed for the door without looking at me again.
“Lianne,” I called before I could stop myself.
She paused, but she didn’t turn back.
I stared at her slender figure, and my throat tightened. Everything I wanted to say disappeared, leaving only one weak excuse. “It’s nothing.”
The door shut with a soft sound.
I leaned back into the chair, my hand tightening around the signed rejection. This was what I wanted. Now I could finally put Ivy’s mind at ease. Still, a dull ache spread through my chest and wouldn’t go away.
I got what I wanted, yet it felt like I had lost everything.
Lianne’s POV
Gripping the amended rejection, I rushed back to my room.
The second the deadbolt snapped shut, my legs buckled beneath me. I sank down against the door until I hit the freezing floor, dragging in shaky breaths while I fought to calm the wild pounding in my chest.
My unsteady hand flattened over my heart, where a pain as keen as a knife was ripping straight through me. It was the mate bond howling in torment.
I had loved Ethan for so long, so hopelessly long, that I could barely remember where it had started.
Back then, I was the proudest warrior in the Pack Academy. Pushed into it by my friends, I went to a formal gala. From the very first instant I spotted Ethan across the dance floor, I was gone, utterly and beyond saving. I knew with complete certainty that he was my fated mate.
But maybe the Moon Goddess had been laughing at me all along. Before we could truly recognize each other, rogue wolves stormed the gala. Trying to save him, I was badly hurt, and in the middle of that chaos, I lost my wolf.
It was only later, after Ivy was gone, that I came back into his life and finally became his mate. I had foolishly convinced myself that if I kept trying, I could one day thaw that frozen heart of his.
