Chapter 73:
He pressed a hand to his aching temples and shoved himself upright with the support of the armrest. But the liquor had dulled him badly; he lurched the moment he stood, almost crashing to the floor.
Without thinking, I rushed over and caught him, my arms circling his waist to hold him steady.
“Get away…” he muttered. He pushed me off with his words, yet his hand closed around my shoulder on instinct.
Ignoring the contradiction, I thanked Jeremy and hauled him out of the bar, half dragging and half carrying him. Ethan was unbelievably heavy. His commanding scent, tangled with the raw smell of alcohol, filled my lungs every time I breathed and left my whole body tingling with numb shivers.
By the time we made it to the elevator, he could hardly stay upright. Like a falling mountain, he pressed me back against the cold wall. The difference in our size was too much. I was completely boxed in by him.
I tipped my head up to look at him, only to meet a pair of eyes thick with dark, restrained fire.
“Lianne…” he murmured.
In the very next second, his mouth crashed down on mine without warning. It was a kiss that struck like punishment, but beneath it was a kind of desperation that felt almost hopeless. His tongue swept past my teeth, frantically stealing the air from my lungs as the bitter taste of alcohol spread between us.
I shut my eyes, and my arms lifted on their own, winding around his neck.
I liked this kiss.

Just this once, I told myself. Let this be the final full stop on my three years of one-sided love.
By the time we got to the car, sweat had soaked through me from sheer exhaustion.
I slid into the driver’s seat. “If you’re tired, go ahead and sleep for a while.”
He gave a low hum in reply and closed his eyes. In the dim light, the line of his profile looked especially hard and severe.
By the time we reached the villa, he was already asleep. Sitting there in the driver’s seat, I quietly looked over the sharp angles of his face. When he wasn’t speaking or losing his temper, he still looked like the young man I had fallen for at first sight years ago.
But reality was cruel. Ivy stood between us like something that could never be removed.
Letting out a helpless sigh, I stepped out of the car and went around to the back seat. After a great deal of effort, I pulled him out and staggered with him all the way to the second floor.
Once I saw that he could at least stand on his own, I went straight to my bedroom, planning to lock the door and get some sleep.
But Ethan clung to me like a shadow. He followed me all the way inside. Without so much as looking around, he dropped onto my large bed and passed out at once.
“Ethan, this is my room. Go to the next one…”
The only answer I got was the sound of his heavy breathing.
