Chapter 76:
I told myself this was for her sake. She had always been sensitive. If she saw those insults, she wouldn’t be able to handle it.
But deep down, another thought pushed through, sharp and impossible to ignore. I just wanted to lock her away. I wanted to keep her where I could see her. I wanted to shut her away from everything outside. Even from that man named Frank.
Lianne’s POV
I opened my eyes to a dull, lifeless ceiling.
Wanting to see what time it was, I reached around for my phone, only to find empty space.
It was gone.

I checked the bedside table, the floor, and even the bathroom, but it was nowhere to be found.
After pulling on a robe, I headed downstairs to keep looking.
A servant tidying the living room stopped and looked at me with visible awkwardness. “Good morning, ma’am.”
“Have you seen my phone?” I asked.
The servant paused, then lowered her head and answered, “The Alpha took it with him when he left this morning. He said you’ve been exhausted lately and need proper rest, so no one should bother you.”
He took it?
My heart dropped.
All that talk about rest and not being disturbed was nothing but a cover for locking me down and keeping watch over me.
I drew in a slow breath, forcing down the rage churning inside me, then used the landline in the living room to call Ethan’s private number.
At last, the call went through.
But instead of Ethan’s low, icy voice, what came through was a cloying, saccharine voice. “Hello? Who is this?”
It was Ivy.
“Put Ethan on,” I said, keeping my tone even, though there was no warmth in it.
“Oh, Lianne.” Ivy gave a soft laugh, her voice thick with open smugness and provocation. “Ethan’s a little busy right now, so he can’t answer your call. He’s in the kitchen making lunch for me. He said filming has worn me out lately and insisted on cooking something nutritious for me.”
A sharp ache tore through my chest and spread through my whole body, leaving me barely able to stay on my feet.
“Cooking?” I repeated, unable to believe how ridiculous this was.
“Yeah. You didn’t know?” Ivy sounded even more pleased with herself. “Ethan specially learned how to cook just to match my taste. He’s especially good at red wine braised beef. He used to make it for me all the time. He said in this life, I’m the only one he wants to cook for.”
I parted my lips, but my throat was so dry and burning that not a single word would come out.
For three years, I had gone through recipe after recipe, trying to work out the best meals for his health. Sometimes I would make an entire table full of food and wait for him to come back. But he would either stay out all night or take a few careless bites before setting down his fork.
