Chapter 79:
A freezing terror ran from the soles of my feet all the way to the top of my head.
This wasn’t road rage. This had been planned.
I couldn’t risk my own life or the life of the baby inside me. I didn’t dare get dragged into a high-speed chase.
Forcing myself to stay calm, I turned on my signal and tried to move into the far outer emergency lane so I could pull over and call for help.
Just as I moved into the outer lane, my shaking hand reached for my phone, only for horror to hit me all at once. My phone was with Ethan.
Suddenly, a thunderous blast of sound exploded behind me. The impact hurled my body violently forward. The airbag burst open at once and slammed into my face and chest. My head crashed hard into the side window, and a sharp ringing swallowed the world.
Just before I lost consciousness, I caught a glimpse in the shattered rearview mirror: a white car that had been tailing me was now smashing into my rear bumper with savage force, driving me straight toward the roadside guardrail.

The black car had only been the decoy; the real fatal strike had come from behind.
“Baby…” I whispered weakly, curling myself up and wrapping both arms tightly around my stomach.
Agony spread through every part of my body. Something warm ran from my forehead into my eyes, staining my vision a blinding red.
Ethan…
Even as the darkness closed in, one thought stayed in my mind. If he knew I was dying here, would he feel even the slightest trace of grief? Or would he only think that this troublesome mate was finally gone, leaving him free to be with Ivy without guilt?
I had no chance to think any further. My consciousness dropped into darkness.
Lianne’s POV
It took a long time before I managed to wake up. When my eyes finally opened, all I saw was darkness and shifting shadows.
Panic hit me at once. I raised my hands and rubbed my eyes, trying to force them to focus, but nothing changed.
“I can’t see?” Fear tightened around my chest, making it hard to breathe.
“Don’t panic,” a doctor said gently from beside me. “You were in a serious car accident. There’s a mild concussion, and the scan shows some fluid pressing against your optic nerve. That’s what’s causing the temporary blindness. Once it clears, your vision should come back.”
His explanation didn’t ease the fear in my chest. My voice trembled as I asked, “What about my baby? Is my child still okay?”
“Your baby is fine,” the doctor said, his tone reassuring as he patted my hand. “They’re strong. But your condition isn’t stable yet, so you need to avoid stress.”
Hearing that, I finally let out a breath and relaxed a little.
Not long after, the police came to ask about the accident.
