Chapter 86:
I kept my eyes fixed on the doctor’s mouth, my vision blurred with tears, my hands pressed tightly to my chest. I went on praying silently, wishing for the Moon Goddess to watch over Harold and keep him out of danger.
“Don’t worry. The operation was successful. The patient’s condition is stable for the time being, and his life is not in danger at the moment.”
The instant I heard the doctor’s words, the strain holding my nerves together finally snapped. I slumped against the wall as tears poured down my face.
“However, the patient is advanced in age, and his heart is under tremendous strain. He will need to stay in the intensive care unit under observation for the next couple of days. If no complications arise, he can be transferred to a regular ward after that.”
I watched Harold being wheeled out on a hospital bed, an oxygen tube set beneath his nose, his face drained of all color, looking frail and weak.

At that moment, a fierce pain tore through my chest.
Just a few days ago, he had been sitting in the sun playing chess with me. Now he looked so fragile, as though he might not have much time left.
We followed them all the way to the ICU. The doctor looked at Ethan and me with a heavy expression and motioned for us to talk in his office.
Once inside, the stifling air made it hard to breathe.
“Although the operation was successful, there is something I need to tell you truthfully.” The doctor glanced down at the report in his hand and sighed. “The patient’s body has already been worn down too severely. The decline of his wolf is now affecting all of his organs. Even if he survives this time, he does not have much time remaining. Three months at most.”
Lianne’s POV
Tears kept spilling from my eyes, falling without end no matter how hard I tried to stop them.
Ethan’s warm hand rested against the back of my head, stroking it in slow, steady motions.
“Don’t cry,” he said softly, his voice deep and low. “For the next three months, we’re not going anywhere. We’ll stay here and keep Grandpa company.”
Still sobbing, I nodded and slowly settled down in his arms.
Ethan took me to the care room next door so I could wash up.
After a brief rinse, I lay down on the bed without changing out of my clothes.
The misery of the whole day had worn me out, and I slipped into a deep sleep before I realized it.
In my dream, I returned to three years ago. Back then, Ethan was still in a wheelchair, and somehow, he felt more real than he did now.
At least in those days, his eyes were fixed on no one but me, even if all they held was hatred.
“Lianne, wake up.”
That low voice pulled me out of the dream.
I opened my eyes at once and saw Ethan standing beside the bed.
“Grandpa’s awake. He wants to see you.”
My heart jolted, and the last traces of drowsiness disappeared in an instant.
