Chapter 93:
When the food was served, the waiter poured each of us a glass of red wine.
Ethan lifted his glass. “To your recovery.”
I took a small sip. “Thank you.”
Without a word, he reached for the untouched steak in front of me. Holding the knife and fork in his long, nimble fingers, he cut the meat into neat, even pieces and set the plate back in front of me.
“Eat,” he said softly.
“Thanks,” I said again.

“You’re welcome.” He looked at me with eyes full of gentleness.
For a moment, I nearly believed the lie that we were still those much-envied fated mates, that Ivy was nowhere in our lives, and that there had been no betrayal and no rejection.
When dinner was over, we walked out of the restaurant.
The cool night air cleared away some of the haze from the wine, but it did nothing to calm the odd unease in my chest.
Ethan took my hand as though it were the most natural thing in the world.
His palm was broad and warm, and the rough calluses brushing the back of my hand sent tiny jolts straight into my heart.
I did not pull my hand away.
Maybe it was the wine, or maybe the night itself was too beautiful, but I found myself selfishly taking in this last trace of warmth.
“Shall we head home?” he asked, turning to look at me.
“I want to walk a little,” I said softly.
He agreed without hesitation, and we strolled down the street with no destination in mind.
A deep calm spread through me. I wanted us to keep walking like this forever, all the way to the end of the world.
As we passed an old-fashioned dance hall, the mellow sound of a saxophone drifted out.
“Do you want to go in?” I asked eagerly.
Ethan nodded.
The lighting inside was even dimmer than it had been in the restaurant, steeped in a kind of old-world romance. Several couples moved slowly across the dance floor, their bodies close together in the music.
“Do you want to dance?” Ethan asked as he stood beside me.
“I’m not very good at it…” I fidgeted with my fingers, feeling uneasy.
“It’s fine. I’ll teach you.” He came to a stop, turned toward me, and gave a gentlemanly bow before holding out his right hand. “May I have this dance, beautiful lady?”
My heart stumbled when I met his dark eyes.
Slowly, I set my hand in his and followed him onto the dance floor.
One of his arms circled my waist, while his other hand held mine. Copying the other couples, I placed my free hand on his shoulder.
We started moving slowly with the music.
He was close, far too close. His scent was strong and intoxicating, wrapping around me completely.
“Follow my lead,” he whispered beside my ear, his warm breath brushing my neck and sending a shiver down my spine.
I kept my head lowered, staring at the collar of his shirt.
