Chapter 94:
As we moved, our bodies brushed from time to time. My soft chest grazed his firm one, and even through the thin layer of fabric, I could feel the startling heat coming off him.
His hand rested against the small of my back. Even through the silk of my dress, that warmth felt hot enough to scorch me.
The music grew more tangled, and Ethan’s arm around my waist slowly tightened.
He drew me fully against him, and my nose bumped lightly into his collarbone.
I could sense the change in him. That instinctive, fierce possessiveness that belonged to wolves was quietly stirring in the hazy atmosphere between us.
He lowered his head until his lips barely brushed my earlobe like a shadow.
“Lianne…” He breathed my name, his voice unbearably hoarse.

I shut my eyes and let myself sink into that false tenderness.
Lianne’s POV
“Relax. Just follow my lead.”
Ethan’s low voice stayed by my ear, calm and steady.
He bent slightly, his lips nearly grazing my ear as he counted softly, “One, two, three… turn.”
Thrown off by how close he was, I lost my rhythm and stumbled, my heel landing awkwardly on his polished shoe.
“I’m sorry! I didn’t do that on purpose,” I blurted out, flustered, my face burning.
Ethan didn’t get upset and only let out a quiet laugh. “It’s fine. Shoes can be replaced, as long as you’re not hurt.”
When he lifted his head, the soft lights of the ballroom fell across his striking features. The chill that usually sat in his eyes had given way to amusement.
I found myself staring at him, briefly lost.
“Seen enough?” he asked with a teasing lift of his brow.
My ears flushed red, and I dropped my gaze at once, too mortified to look at him.
Once I found the rhythm, I moved easily in his arms, keeping pace with the music.
It felt almost unreal. Everything around us seemed to disappear, until it felt as though only the two of us remained, moving in step and sinking into the dance.
As more people slowly joined the floor, someone bumped into me from the side by accident.
Ethan moved at once. He pulled me straight into his arms and held me tightly against him.
“Are you alright?” he asked, his brows drawing together slightly.
I nodded, a small warmth spreading through my chest.
By the time the dance ended, a sheen of sweat had formed on my forehead.
Noticing it, Ethan led me to a nearby booth and had me sit down.
“I’m going to the restroom. Stay here, and don’t go anywhere,” he said.
Not long after he walked away, a young werewolf with an elegant air and a careless look came over.
Swirling the drink in his hand, he looked me over with bad intentions, introduced himself as Leo Ashford, and asked me to dance.
“Sorry, I’m tired,” I refused politely.
But he wouldn’t let it go and even caught hold of my wrist, trying to pull me onto the floor. “Don’t be like that. Just one dance. I guarantee it’ll be better than last time…”
