Chapter 140:
After he walked out, the room fell completely still. I glanced at the phone he had left on the table, and just then, the screen lit up with a new message. “Ethan, Ivy’s in trouble. Pick up!”
Then Ava’s name flashed across the caller ID as the phone rang over and over.
Ava was Ivy’s personal assistant, and I understood Ivy better than anyone. Whenever Ethan started drawing close to me, whenever any trace of tenderness appeared between us, something would just so happen to happen to Ivy.
The resentment I had kept buried for so long suddenly came roaring up from somewhere deep inside me.
This time, I refused to keep playing the role of the understanding mate.

My hands shaking, I grabbed his phone and rejected the call.
I hurriedly erased the message and the call history, then held the power button until the pale light from the screen died out completely.
The room fell utterly silent.
I set the phone back where it had been, my heartbeat slamming hard against my chest.
When Ethan came back, he looked completely normal.
He took his seat again, saw that I had barely eaten, and a rare trace of softness showed in his eyes. “What’s wrong? Is the food not to your liking? Want to try the dessert here? You used to really like the molten chocolate cake.”
I made myself stay calm and forced a stiff smile. “Sure.”
But before the waiter could serve the dessert, the door to the private room was flung open with a violent bang.
“Ethan! Where the hell were you?”
Liam Hunter, Ethan’s friend, burst in looking frantic, his eyes red-rimmed as if he had just come straight out of some disaster.
Ethan frowned and shot to his feet. “Are you insane, Liam?”
“Ivy was filming on set when a crew member’s mistake left her trapped in a fire. She was badly burned, and no one knows what condition she’s in!” Liam shouted, sounding like he had lost control. He lunged for the table and grabbed Ethan’s phone. “How many times did I call you? Why was your phone turned off? Do you have any idea she was calling your name?”
All the color drained from Ethan’s face at once.
Liam whipped around and stared at me with raw hatred. “This was you, wasn’t it? You’re the one behind this, you vicious woman! Were you scared Ethan would leave, so you switched off his phone?”
He jabbed a finger at me and hurled abuse without stopping. “You shameless home-wrecker! Do you really think just because you’re Ethan’s mate, you can keep his heart? Let me tell you this: if anything happens to Ivy, I’ll make you pay for it with your life!”
“Home-wrecker?” I let out a bitter laugh and rose slowly, my nails pressing hard into my palm. “Liam, open your eyes and look carefully. I am Ethan’s lawful mate, the Luna of the Thorn Pack! Ivy is the one interfering in our marriage!”
“That’s enough!” Ethan’s voice cracked through the room, cold and sharp. He picked up his phone and tried to power it on, but the screen stayed black.
