Chapter 142:
I drifted through the empty streets at night like a ghost with nowhere to go. The icy wind slipped down my collar, but it did nothing to lift the crushing weight in my chest.
Ivy was right. I never took that bet with her because I knew from the beginning it was one I could never win.
Only a few days ago, Ethan had still been talking about the promise he made to Harold, saying he would truly try to make things work with me.
And yet, in the space of a moment, those gentle words became the cruelest kind of lie.
The custom ring he wouldn’t give me had already told me everything. His heart had never belonged to me.
I had lost completely. How absurd. How pitiful.
In my haze, everything around me grew unfamiliar and bleak. The streetlights were faint, and the air was heavy with the smell of decay and moisture.
I came to a stop and realized I had wandered into the old district at the edge of town.
“Well, well, well, look what we have here. A pretty little she-wolf all alone.”

The voice came out of the darkness, oily and full of malice.
A moment later, three large, broad-shouldered figures with lifeless eyes emerged from the shadows and closed in around me in a triangle, cutting off my escape.
My heart lurched without warning. It was a werewolf’s natural instinct for danger.
They were rogue wolves.
They were outcasts, stripped of reason and any sense of restraint. They posed a grave danger to every werewolf.
“I have a mate.” I swallowed my fear and stepped back. “My mate is an Alpha. He’s close by. If you know what’s best for you, leave.”
“A mate?” The scar-faced rogue at the front gave a scornful laugh, his covetous eyes fixed on my bare collarbone. “Darling, if your mate truly cared about you, would he let you walk around a place like this by yourself?”
He stretched out his grimy hand and tried to seize my wrist.
“Don’t touch me!” I shoved him away with all my strength and spun around to run.
“Damn it! Catch her. I’ll strip her naked right here!”
A feral roar exploded behind me. I knew they had been provoked.
I ran as fast as I could, my heart hammering in my chest.
If my wolf, Anna, were still with me, I would never have needed to run. I could have torn out their throats without effort.
But now I was nothing but an empty shell, even weaker than an ordinary Omega.
There was no way I could outrun them.
As I ran past a narrow alley, I took advantage of the terrain and quickly ducked behind a stack of abandoned wooden crates. Holding my breath, I pulled out my phone with shaking hands.
Ethan’s name glowed on the screen in the darkness.
He couldn’t have gone far. As long as he picked up, as long as he felt my fear through the mate bond, he would come to save me.
But the call was coldly rejected.
At that moment, my heart sank.
