Chapter 144:
Ethan’s POV:
I floored the accelerator. The engine thundered through the stillness of the night.
Lianne’s words from when I left the restaurant kept echoing in my head. “Ethan, if you leave through that door today, then there’s no future left for us.”
Her voice hadn’t been loud. She hadn’t cried or yelled, but her words hit me like a knife.
The pull of the mate bond made my fingers clench and shake around the steering wheel.
A sudden, inexplicable unease rose in me.

Lianne had always been gentle. Even when I ignored her or got her wrong, she had always taken everything I gave her without complaint.
“She just said it in anger,” I muttered to myself, trying to calm the agitated wolf inside me. “She’s only jealous of Ivy. Once I’ve handled things at the hospital, I’ll come back and make it up to her.”
Just then, my phone screen lit up with Lianne’s name.
My finger paused over the screen for a second.
The mate bond flared hard, urging me to pick up. But when I thought of Ivy possibly lying in the operating room, with no one knowing what state she was in, and of my duty as an Alpha to my first love, I steeled myself and hit decline.
I couldn’t let Lianne sway me. I couldn’t afford to hesitate at a time like this.
I had taken it for nothing more than a routine argument. I never understood that, in doing so, I had severed her final plea for help.
The hallway outside the ward reeked of harsh disinfectant.
I made my way quickly to the room. Ava stood beside the bed, the rims of her eyes flushed from crying.
The moment she noticed me, she shot to her feet, her voice tight with panic. “You’re here at last! Ivy still hasn’t woken up!”
“How badly is she hurt?” I asked in a low, grave tone, staring at the person on the bed beneath layers of bandages.
“Second-degree burns over twenty-three percent of her body!” Ava swiped at her tears as she talked, flinging her hands about dramatically. “By the time they dragged her out, her skin and tissue were already badly burned and torn. The doctor said that if it had been five minutes later, they wouldn’t have been able to save her leg. She called you twice for help before she went into the fire. Why didn’t you pick up? Do you have any idea how hopeless she must have felt?”
Remorse hit me all at once, like a wave crashing over my head.
“Liam said the main entrance to the fire scene had been locked from the outside. It must have been Lianne!” Ava stepped closer, jaw tight, her voice edged with fury. “You can’t go on covering for her. This was attempted murder. You have to make her pay!”
