Chapter 152:
I remained where I was, a cold shiver climbing my spine.
And then it came back to me. This recording was from the night Lianne was admitted to the hospital after the car crash.
So Ivy had actually provoked her like this.
In front of me, she had always acted soft-spoken, thoughtful, even slightly humble.
But the woman in that recording felt like a stranger, and the contrast made my skin crawl.
My mind immediately went to Ivy’s post, and to her so-called burns.
Once doubt took root, it multiplied fast.

Little by little, I began to see how Ivy must have treated my mate whenever I wasn’t there.
Right then, my phone lit up.
It was a text from Ivy. “I’m sorry, Ethan. I acted too rashly. Tomorrow night is my birthday party. You said you’d come. Are you still coming?”
I fixed my eyes on the message, fury rising in my chest, and then I forced it back down.
“Okay.” I sent back only that one word.
Her next message came almost immediately. “Then what about the promise you made before? That you’d make our relationship public at the party. Are you still going to do that?”
A cold laugh slipped out of me as I typed my reply. “This is the last birthday I’ll ever spend with you.”
The other side went completely silent.
A few seconds later, an urgent mind-link message crashed straight into my head.
“Why? Why are you treating me like this?” Ivy’s voice rang out in my mind, full of raw desperation. “Is this because of Lianne? Have you fallen for her?”
I shut my eyes and endured the sharp discomfort of the forced connection, speaking in a calm, cold voice. “Ivy, I can make it up to you in any material way. I can give you the best food, the best home, even a better career. Voss Group can make you well known. You can have all the status and recognition you’ve always wanted. But I can’t reciprocate your feelings.”
“I don’t care about status or recognition! I only want you!” she screamed, nearly hysterical.
“You know very well what you’ve done. Don’t test my patience,” I said flatly.
I gave her no reply to her question about whether I had fallen for Lianne, because I didn’t know the answer myself.
I cut off the mind link, silenced my phone, and dropped it hard onto the desk.
The agitation that had been pressing on me finally loosened, replaced by a faint sense of relief I had never felt before.
Lianne’s POV:
Compared to Norvynford, Gattenwood gave me a sense of freedom I hadn’t felt in a while.
The trip was supposed to last four days, but I pushed myself to finish everything early. By the third morning, all the work was already done.
Holding the completed project report, I finally relaxed and breathed out. The pressure that had been weighing on me these past few days slowly lifted.
