Chapter 163:
“I’m not happy,” I said, pressing my hand against his chest to push him back. “I’m thinking about what you’re going to do about Ivy.”
The moment her name came up, Ethan’s expression changed. He paused before speaking, his voice steady. “Ivy’s illness is related to me. She could relapse at any time. I can’t cut her off completely right now. If I do, she won’t survive.”
A short laugh slipped from me, but before I could respond, he caught my hand.
“Listen, I’ll see her less. From now on, I’ll focus on you. Everything I have will be for you. Lianne, give me another chance. Can you try to accept me like this?”

I said nothing and gave no reply.
After everything that had happened, after all that pain, any trust I had in him was already gone.
When I stayed silent, unease crept onto his face. “I won’t meet Ivy alone anymore. If I go, you’ll come with me. Or you can assign someone to stay with me all the time and keep watch. I’ll agree to anything if it makes you feel secure.”
Raising my head, I looked at him and spoke evenly. “Then what happens the next time she calls you, saying she’s relapsing again, or something goes wrong, and begs you to go? What will you do?”
Ethan’s body tensed before he drew a breath and answered with weight in his voice. “I won’t go on my own again. If I have to go, I’ll take you with me. Lianne, I mean it.”
“You’d better remember what you said,” I replied, my voice steady and without feeling.
Deep down, I understood clearly that Ivy would never step back so easily. As for his so-called feelings, I had already let go of any belief in them.
Choosing to stay and give in for now had nothing to do with love. Harold was the only reason.
Harold’s condition couldn’t handle any more disruption. He was the only one who had ever truly cared for me, and all I wanted was to stay by his side and see him through the rest of his life in peace.
As for Ethan, if he wanted to act like a devoted husband, then I would let him play that role.
Taking my silence as agreement, Ethan relaxed and pulled me into his arms again.
His hand pressed against the back of my head while his chin rested against my temple, and he let out a quiet breath.
Lianne’s POV:
I let Ethan keep holding me, but my whole body remained rigid.
After a while, he slowly released me and said in a low voice, “Come on. Let’s go home.”
I gave a faint nod.
Ethan and I returned home and sat down to dinner together, acting like a devoted couple. When the meal was over, the servants moved soundlessly through the kitchen, clearing everything away.
Ethan placed his wineglass on the table, turned to me, and asked, “Do you want to walk in the garden?”
I nodded and rose without saying anything.
