Chapter 186:
Lately, he had been wanting sex far too often. It made me worry about the baby I was carrying. The doctor had warned me to be especially careful during the first three months.
I had no plan to tell him I was pregnant.
Until everything between us truly came to an end, this child was my final bargaining chip and the only thing holding me up.
Ethan stilled, then let out a frustrated breath, but he did not press the matter.
He only pulled me closer, his chin grazing the crown of my head, and muttered in a muffled voice, “Alright. Goodnight.”
Over the next few days, we lived like an ordinary couple, wandering the streets, watching the falling leaves in the park, and going to performances at a well-known opera house.
He stopped bringing up Ivy, and I decided not to think about the turmoil waiting back home.
This short-lived happiness we had stolen felt as delicate as a dream, beautiful and breakable, as though it could collapse at any second.

After we came back, Ethan rested only a few days before leaving again on another business trip.
I pulled myself together and forced all my attention back onto work.
One afternoon, while I was reviewing project files, a string of urgent, forceful knocks suddenly rang through the office.
Before I could say anything, the door had already been pushed open.
Two officers in uniform stepped inside, their faces grim.
They showed me their badges, their cold eyes moving across my face. “Are you Lianne Riley?”
I put down my pen, my heart giving a sharp jolt, but I kept my expression calm. “Yes. May I ask what this is about?”
“We received a report that someone within Voss Group is suspected of leaking confidential commercial information, causing major losses to the company. Based on the evidence we currently have, you are one of the primary suspects. Please come with us and cooperate with the investigation.”
Outside the office, the busy staff had all stopped what they were doing.
Through the clear glass wall, I could feel countless curious eyes on me, some of them openly pleased by what they were seeing.
“What exactly was leaked? When did it happen, and where? And what proof do you have for suspecting me?” I rose to my feet and asked the questions one after another, my tone steady and professional.
One of the officers took out a comparison file. “A rival company has just published its quarterly proposal, and it matches the core design of the Sparkle project exactly. Finn Palmer, deputy director of the marketing department, filed the report and submitted surveillance footage as evidence. The footage shows that on the afternoon the information was leaked, you entered the CEO’s office alone and remained inside for more than an hour.”
My heart dropped.
That day, Ethan had an important appointment to attend. Before leaving, he had told me that if I got tired, I could rest in the lounge inside his office.
I had never imagined that a moment of warmth between mates would one day become the thing used to wound me.
“Please come with us,” the officer said again.
