Chapter 189:
After that, I went to the dressing table and picked out the makeup remover from among the many bottles and jars.
Copying the steps I had seen her do before, I moistened several cotton pads and went back to the bed.
The remover was a little cold, and the moment it touched her face, she frowned unhappily and lifted her slim arms to push it away.
“Be good.” I caught her hand and gently, if somewhat awkwardly, wiped away the traces of makeup still left at the corners of her eyes.

She turned her face aside on instinct to avoid me, so I freed one hand and lightly cupped her chin, coaxing her to face me again.
It was the first time I had ever taken care of someone like this.
As Alpha of the Thorn Pack, I had long been accustomed to others bowing before me, never to crouching patiently beside someone’s bed.
And yet, as I watched her face slowly become clean and clear again, I felt no impatience whatsoever. What rose in me instead was an unfamiliar sense of contentment.
When I finished, I still didn’t get up right away.
I remained seated on the edge of the bed, quietly looking at her in the dim moonlight. Her lashes were long and thick, curving gently and casting tiny shadows across her almost translucent skin.
From this distance, I could even make out the soft fuzz on her face.
At that moment, a thought came to me. If not for Ivy, if not for that cursed accident, could we have truly become the kind of fated mates others envied?
The sudden vibration of my phone broke the stillness of the room.
Reacting quickly, I answered at once, careful not to wake Lianne, then stepped silently out of the master bedroom and shut the door behind me.
It was Finn calling.
“Alpha,” her voice carried a trace of unease as she circled around the point. “About the leak, I spoke too impulsively and ended up offending Lianne. Could you please say a few good words for me in front of her? I truly didn’t mean anything by it.”
I gave a short, cold laugh, and my face instantly hardened.
She was probing me. If she had really wanted to apologize, she should have called Lianne herself, not come to me.
I already knew she was close to Nancy, and there was every chance the leak had something to do with the two of them.
“There’s no need to apologize,” I said icily, with not a trace of warmth in my voice. “You should have thought about the consequences before laying a hand on someone I care about.”
I hung up before she had the chance to beg any further.
After that, exhaustion hit me all at once.
I washed up quickly, then lay down beside Lianne. Listening to her even breathing, I soon fell into a deep sleep.
At four in the morning, an urgent message through mind link suddenly tore through my consciousness. It was a distress signal from my Beta.
My eyes snapped open, instantly awake.
