Chapter 196:
Ethan stepped forward and lowered himself onto the chair by her bedside.
There was a flicker of hesitation in his movement, yet in the end, he still reached out, his voice soft as he called, “Ivy, it’s me.”
Ivy’s entire body trembled. Her lips quivered uncontrollably, tears spilling freely down her pale cheeks, her expression utterly heart-wrenching.
“Is it really you? Ethan, you came to see me?”
She shakily lifted her hand, reaching toward his face.
Ethan instinctively leaned back slightly.
In that fleeting moment, I caught a trace of resentment flashing through Ivy’s eyes. But it vanished almost instantly, swallowed by an even greater surge of tears.
“I thought you didn’t want me anymore. I thought you were truly going to leave me behind.”
Ivy broke into a desperate sob and suddenly lunged forward, throwing herself into Ethan’s arms.
Her fingers clutched tightly at his suit, her body curling into him as she trembled uncontrollably.
Ethan went completely still. His hands hovered awkwardly in the air, as though caught between impulse and restraint.

In the end, he let out a quiet sigh, his palm settling gently against her back as he patted it over and over in silent reassurance.
I stood a short distance away, like someone with no place in the scene, watching everything unfold without a trace of expression.
There was no searing pain as I had once imagined, no uncontrollable fury.
My heart lay still, like water long untouched.
Hadn’t I already known this would happen before stepping into this room?
As I looked at the two of them locked together, a strange sense of irony crept over me.
I, the rightful mate, standing here now, seemed nothing more than an unnecessary observer.
Ivy suddenly bent forward and coughed up another mouthful of blood, crimson droplets staining the pristine white sheets in a jarring display.
Her once delicate features had drained of all color, leaving her pale as lifeless paper.
Ethan’s brows drew together tightly as he turned to the doctor nearby, his voice low and commanding. “Come here and take care of this.”
Yet the moment the doctor stepped closer, Ivy recoiled behind Ethan as if confronted by something horrifying.
“Don’t come near me! Stay away! All of you, keep your distance!” she cried out, her voice raw and broken.
The doctor halted mid-step, casting Ethan a helpless look.
“Ivy, stop making a scene,” Ethan said, his tone firm, leaving no room for defiance. “Work with the treatment and take the medication. Otherwise, you truly won’t survive.”
Ivy lifted her head, tears streaming down her face, mingling with the blood at her lips, giving her a haunting, fragile beauty.
A faint, sorrowful smile touched her mouth, her voice barely more than a whisper. “If it’s in your arms, even dying would be worth it. Ethan, without you, what difference is there between living and dying?”
Lianne’s POV:
Ethan’s body went rigid for a brief second, and he instinctively turned his head to look at me.
