Chapter 199:
The next moment, his hand came up, warm and firm, cradling the back of my head.
He pulled me sharply against his chest, his jacket shielding my face completely from view.
“Don’t look.” His voice brushed against my ear, low and restrained. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have taken you to the hospital.”
I leaned into him, hearing the steady rhythm of his heartbeat, surrounded by the faint scent of sandalwood. The protection he offered in that moment was real, yet the bitterness inside me only deepened.
No matter how kind he could be, it was never meant to last.
The reporters refused to relent.
They hammered against the windows, their questions cutting through the air like blades.
“Alpha, why are you shielding your mistress?”
“Lianne, do you feel any guilt over what happened to Ivy?”

Each word struck like a slap to me.
Hospital security rushed in without delay, pushing their way through the crowd and carving out a narrow path.
The driver seized the moment, easing the car forward before spotting an opening. He pressed down hard on the accelerator, pulling us swiftly away from that chaotic swarm.
Even after we had put considerable distance between us and the scene, the silence inside the car remained heavy and suffocating.
Ethan’s arm was still wrapped around me, his expression cold, his gaze fixed on the passing scenery outside.
We had been careful, almost secretive, when arriving at the hospital. How could so many reporters have gathered so quickly?
There was no way I could believe it was a coincidence. Someone had clearly orchestrated it, leaking our location with intent.
“It’s alright.” Ethan spoke again, his voice low as his hand moved in a steady, reassuring rhythm against my back. “I’ll take care of it.”
I shook my head and pulled away from him, putting space between us. “I’m fine.”
I was already accustomed to this kind of ordeal.
Just then, Ethan’s phone, lying on the console, began to ring.
He glanced at the screen, his brows tightening slightly before he ended the call without hesitation.
But whoever was calling refused to give up. The phone rang again, only to be cut off once more. It rang, was rejected, and rang again, over and over, the sharp vibration echoing loudly in the otherwise silent car.
A few minutes later, it switched to a flood of incoming messages, the screen lighting up repeatedly.
Ethan remained still, like a statue, not even sparing it a glance.
But I already knew who it must be, Ivy, or someone connected to her.
In this world, the only woman capable of stirring him like this while he pretended indifference was her.
The car eventually descended into the underground parking of Voss Group, coming to a stop in front of the executive elevator.
As the elevator doors opened, Ethan suddenly halted.
“Lianne, you go up first.” He turned toward me, something unreadable flickering through his eyes. “I just remembered something urgent I need to deal with. I’ll be back shortly.”
“Alright,” I answered evenly, my voice devoid of any emotion.
