Chapter 220:
“Didn’t I try?” Jeremy shot back. “The way you’ve looked at Lianne has exposed you for ages. You keep telling yourself it’s duty. You keep calling it habit. It isn’t. It’s your Alpha nature, and it’s been proving for a long time that you’re in love with her. And what did you do with that? You took what she felt for you and used it to patch over whatever guilt you still carry for Ivy.”
I went completely still, unable to process it for several long seconds.
So I had already loved her long before I admitted it to myself.
Every irrational thing I had done suddenly made sense, and the truth behind it was almost cruel.

I said we could break the bond and remain friends because I could not picture my life with her gone from it.
I refused to let her resign and hid behind the excuse of the company, but the truth was selfish. I wanted her where I could still see her.
I delayed ending things because some part of me had been fighting against a life that no longer had her in it.
I even kept Ivy at a distance because, in my heart and in my instincts, I had already chosen Lianne and no one else.
“Ivy is grown. Leaving back then was her decision, and the consequences of that decision belong to her.” Jeremy struck my shoulder with a firm hand, his voice stripped of warmth. “You had no right to use Lianne to fill that endless void in you. You chose to leave Lianne behind and chase after Ivy, and then had the nerve to blame Lianne for not being understanding enough… Ethan, you’re a complete bastard.”
After saying that, Jeremy walked out, leaving me by myself in the stillness of the private room.
I shut my eyes, and every thought in my head turned into Lianne.
At last, I knew what it was I truly wanted. But I feared I had come to that truth far too late.
Deep into the night, I got into the car and headed straight for the Mensley Hotel.
The driver told me we had arrived. I opened my eyes, my gaze steady and ice-cold.
I reached out to Ivy through the mind link, my tone stripped of all feeling. “I’m downstairs at your hotel. Come see me.”
Before long, I saw Ivy hurrying into the lobby, dressed in a thin nightgown with a coat thrown over it in haste.
The instant she spotted me, surprise brightened her face, and she quickly came toward me.
“Ethan, what are you doing here? Have you been drinking?” She lifted a hand, trying to touch my face, her voice overflowing with concern. “Come and have some coffee, alright? I can massage your shoulders.”
I turned away from her hand.
As I looked at Ivy’s face, all I felt was distance and irritation.
The heavy perfume on her made the wolf inside me recoil with disgust.
“There’s no need,” I refused without hesitation.
Ivy went still, her hand suspended awkwardly in midair. “What’s wrong? Did Lianne say something to you again?”
“I want you to leave the country. You can choose where to go. I’ll give you enough money to live comfortably for the rest of your life.”
