Chapter 229:
Blood and foam spilled from my lips. The crushing weight on my chest stole my breath, pinning me down so completely that I could only watch as the pale gray ashes stirred faintly in the wind.
In that moment, the pain became unbearable, swallowing everything else whole.
Tiana looked down at me, satisfaction flickering in her eyes.
She dusted off her hands with casual indifference, as if she had just dealt with something unclean, and let out a cold scoff. “You three, make sure you ‘take care’ of her. Don’t let her die. I want her alive to see my daughter become Luna.”

With that, she turned away, the sharp echo of her heels fading into the distance.
The three men left behind traded looks, something foul and predatory flickering in their eyes.
They rolled me over onto my back, their grip rough and unrestrained as their hands moved over me without hesitation. Cloth ripped apart under their force, the sharp tearing sound slicing through the air, and the biting chill of late autumn struck my exposed skin all at once.
“Get away from me! Don’t touch me!” I shook my head desperately, and in my panic, I cried out within my mind, “Anna, help me!”
Anna was my wolf, the one who had fallen into a deep slumber three years ago to save Ethan, perhaps gone forever.
Just when I felt myself slipping toward unconsciousness, something faint stirred deep within my mind, subtle, yet unmistakable.
Was that a response?
I went still, the despair in my eyes giving way to stunned disbelief.
Was it real? Or just my mind trying to shield me from the pain?
“Anna?” I called again, my voice trembling.
At that moment, two piercing beams of light tore through the darkness in the distance, followed by the thunder of an engine rushing closer with alarming speed.
“Damn it! Someone’s coming!” The one tugging at my clothes shouted in panic, scrambling to his feet.
“Let’s go! Leave her!”
The vehicle barreled toward us, its headlights so blinding I couldn’t keep my eyes open.
Clearly shaken, the three of them left me without hesitation and rushed toward the van.
One of them reached for my hair, trying to drag me along, but the driver leaned on the horn and yelled, “Get in! Do you want to die?”
The engine roared as the van jolted forward, tires screeching against the ground as it sped away, leaving the cemetery swallowed once more by silence.
I lay there on the cold earth, struggling to catch my breath. Inside my mind, I kept calling out Anna’s name, but whatever I had felt before was gone, leaving only the hollow whisper of the wind.
It really had just been an illusion.
But I didn’t have the luxury of giving in to that disappointment.
Gritting my teeth, I forced myself to endure the pain tearing through my body. With what little strength remained, I turned over and began dragging myself toward my father’s scattered ashes, inch by inch.
Each movement scraped my skin harshly against the gravel, but I barely registered it.
All I wanted was to gather him back into my arms.
