Chapter 232:
“Your ear was injured. The doctor said your eardrum is perforated, so your hearing will be affected for a while, but it should recover gradually.”
His breath brushed faintly against my ear, and I instinctively leaned away.
“My dad’s ashes…” I ignored my own condition, gripping his sleeve tightly, tears rising instantly in my eyes.
“Don’t worry.” Ethan closed his hand around mine, his grip firm, almost as if he feared I might slip away. “I’ve already taken care of everything. I chose a proper place for him. When you’re discharged, I’ll take you there.”
Some of the tension in my chest eased slightly.
“I want to see my face,” I said, fixing my gaze on him.

At first, Ethan refused, his eyes shifting away as he tried to assure me there wouldn’t be any scars.
But when I continued to insist, he finally took out his phone, switched to the front camera, and handed it to me.
The reflection on the screen showed a mess, my hair tangled, my eyes swollen. Thick bandages covered both sides of my face, leaving only patches of bruised, mottled skin visible.
I looked terrible.
I shut my eyes, letting out a quiet, self-mocking smile, and told him to take it away.
“Who did this?” I asked.
“It was Tiana Brooks, Ivy’s mother,” Ethan answered, his voice cold and cutting. “She arranged your abduction, and she’s also suspected of murdering Ivy’s father. She’s already been taken into custody.”
I stared at him in shock. Tiana had killed her own husband?
I never would have guessed that Ivy came from such a twisted, chaotic household.
“Lianne, there’s something else.” Ethan’s grip on my hand suddenly tightened, his gaze locked sharply on my stomach. “The doctor says you’re showing signs of a threatened miscarriage. You need complete bed rest.”
My body stiffened, and I instinctively moved to shield my stomach. So he knew.
“The baby might not even be yours.” I met his stare deliberately, my voice sharp and cold.
Ethan didn’t flinch. A bitter smile tugged at his lips. “Stop lying to me, Lianne. The pills in your bag, the symptoms you’ve had over the past few months, I know everything. Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Tell you?” I laughed, a harsh sound breaking through my chest, tears slipping from my eyes into the bandages. “I thought about it. I really did. But the moment you came back from that business trip, the first thing out of your mouth was that you wanted to end things between us. I asked what you’d do if we had a baby. Do you remember what you said? You said that there was no such scenario, and that even if I were pregnant, you wouldn’t let me keep the baby.”
Color drained from Ethan’s face. He dropped his head suddenly, voice raw, almost fracturing. “Lianne, I’m sorry. I’m such a bastard. I failed to protect both of you. Please, for the sake of our child, give me another chance.”
“And what about Ivy?” I asked evenly, my tone detached.
