Chapter 233:
Ethan’s voice turned icy, clipped. “Don’t bring her up. She’s not part of our lives anymore.”
A cold weight settled over me.
He could turn away from me for Ivy, and now, for the sake of the baby and his guilt, he could just as easily leave Ivy too, who might already have lost her father.
With him, love could feel consuming, but apathy cut just as deep.

A maid entered with breakfast, and Ethan took it upon himself to feed me.
Each spoonful of porridge was cooled with painstaking care. His movements were deliberate, tender, almost reverent, as if he were handling something fragile and invaluable.
Afterward, I pressed him to leave for work. He hesitated, reluctant to go, but when I insisted coldly, he finally relented. He reminded the maid repeatedly before leaving, reluctant to step out the door.
“Ma’am, you’ve been through so much,” the maid murmured while clearing the dishes. “Alpha has barely slept these past few days. He’s stayed by your side the whole time. He really cares about you.”
He cared about me?
I stared at the sunlight spilling in through the window, but my chest felt hollow.
Was this care genuine love? Or guilt? Or simply the responsibility he felt because of the baby, the one living proof of him and me?
How long could a loveless union, held together by a child and remorse, endure? I didn’t know the answer.
Lianne’s POV
During the three days I spent under observation, the hospital room buzzed with an energy I hadn’t expected.
Harold and Rola came to see me.
As Rola guided Harold through the doorway, she leaned close and murmured her complaint to me. She had originally planned for Harold to rest at home and visit alone. But the moment he learned I was expecting, a spark lit his eyes, and he insisted on coming himself.
“He hasn’t stopped talking about the future leader of the pack,” she said, her expression brimming with quiet joy.
I studied Harold’s lined, hopeful face, a swirl of emotions settling in my chest.
I knew how deeply he had longed for Ethan and me to have a child. It wasn’t merely about carrying on the bloodline; it was about the pack, the foundation of his world, something he cherished with all his heart. Seeing the light in his eyes, I couldn’t bring myself to refuse him.
I secretly wished he could linger a little longer, long enough to witness the baby’s arrival.
Harold clasped my hand, and though his words remained unspoken, his gaze pleaded, encouraging Ethan and me to raise the child together.
The yearning in his eyes for a complete family pressed heavily on me, reminding me that for the months ahead, I wouldn’t have the heart to speak of ending things between Ethan and me.
Throughout these days, Ethan acted like the ideal husband.
He turned down every social engagement and appeared in my room promptly after work, day after day.
