Chapter 238:
He settled onto the edge of the bed, holding me snugly against his chest, his chin resting lightly atop my head, his body still quivering slightly from tension.
“Ethan…” I leaned into him, quiet for a long stretch, before finally speaking. “We need to talk about Ivy.”
A thick, suffocating silence stretched between us.
My chest tightened as panic, familiar and unwelcome, crept over me in slow waves.
I let out a bitter laugh, attempting to pull away. “If you don’t want to talk, forget it. I’ll drop it.”
“Don’t move.” Ethan’s frown deepened as he drew me closer, wrapping his arms firmly around my waist. “What is it you want to say?”

I pressed my lips together, lifting my gaze to meet his. “Have you truly severed all ties with her? Not out of guilt, not because of her mother’s mistakes, but because you don’t have feelings for her anymore?”
Ethan said nothing. Suddenly, he leaned down, capturing my lips in a rough, demanding kiss. It was possessive, consuming, and he didn’t pull away until my lungs threatened to betray me.
“I never had feelings for her,” he whispered, pressing his forehead to mine, voice rough with sincerity. “I cared for her out of obligation, for a debt from long ago. It was responsibility, nothing more.”
“But that answer doesn’t satisfy me.” I met his gaze steadily, clarity in my eyes. “Ethan, you’ve said things like this before, but every time something happened, you never put me first. If you don’t cut things off with Ivy completely, even hearing her name will sting worse than anything else.”
Ethan’s eyes held a storm of conflicting emotions before settling into a hard, determined focus.
“I get it. I’ve been a fool before, but I’ll work to make things right.” He drew me close, holding me with the weight of a vow. “Lianne, I swear, you’ll be my only mate, my only wife, for the rest of my life.”
When I caught my reflection in his eyes, my face still partially wrapped in bandages, my eyes bright and alert, my heart skipped a beat.
That long-lost thrill pulsed through me again.
On impulse, I leaned forward and lightly nipped at his Adam’s apple. That spot was the most delicate, exposed place on an Alpha.
“Really?” I murmured teasingly, echoing the playful way he had once courted me.
Ethan’s breath hitched instantly. His eyes darkened, and he pinned me beneath him, hands braced beside my ears, voice low and urgent.
“Lianne, you’re playing with fire.”
Lianne’s POV
I finally slipped into a deep sleep, the first peaceful one I’d had in a long while.
When I opened my eyes, Ethan had gone to work. Sunlight streamed through the curtains, laying warm bands of gold across the foot of the bed.
After breakfast, I took a seat on the terrace with a book in hand, while the gentle breeze brushed softly against my skin. The baby seemed to feel how calm I was for once and stayed completely quiet.
Later that afternoon, I fell asleep again, and by the time I woke, dusk had already settled outside.
