Chapter 241:
The gaze that was filled with tenderness last night, focused on my abdomen, now seemed cold and lifeless.
For a brief second, he looked at me. Then he turned away without a second thought, as if I didn’t matter at all.
My thoughts came to a stop.
How did it come to this?
Just last night, he held me close and spoke of a future that would last a lifetime.
Just last night, he pressed his lips to my wounds and told me I was the only one for him.
So how did everything change in a single night?
“Ethan, talk to me!” I said, staring straight at him.
Something had clearly happened while I knew nothing about it.
Questions crowded my mind, yet the irritation in his eyes shut me up before I could even begin.

“Would you look at that. Our ‘honorable’ Luna showed up.” One of the guys laughed, his voice dripping with mockery. “You think carrying his child gives you the right to mind his business? Take a good look at yourself. That bandage on your face makes you hard to look at. Who wouldn’t feel sick seeing that?”
Laughter spread through the group.
With her eyes red, Tracy grabbed my arm and pulled hard. “Lianne! Stop it! We need to go!”
I pulled my hand away and pushed her to leave first.
Tracy hesitated, then walked off. Tears pressed against my eyes, but I forced them back as I kept looking at Ethan. “Last night… do those promises still mean anything to you?”
At last, he met my eyes.
He set his glass down, and a cruel smile formed on his lips.
That expression struck right where it hurt the most.
“Are you seriously that naive?” He leaned back in his seat, his posture loose, yet his voice cut sharp with every word. “You actually believe anything a man says in bed?”
His words hit me all at once.
My face drained of all color, and I trembled violently all over. Disgust filled his eyes, as though just looking at me brought him shame.
So everything he showed me was a lie.
What he felt about the child meant nothing.
That whole story he fed me was only meant to keep me under control, just to make sure I wouldn’t get rid of the baby.
The looks around me turned heavy. Each stare carried mockery, and it pressed down on me until I could barely breathe.
I had never felt this ashamed in my life.
I pulled in a breath and tried to steady myself, holding on to the last bit of composure I had left. My voice came out rough as I faced the room and said, “I’m sorry for interrupting.”
Without waiting for a response, I turned toward the exit. Each step felt slow and heavy.
Heat built in my eyes, and my sight started to blur.
Even then, I kept my chin up. I wouldn’t let a single tear fall in a place that made me feel sick.
