Chapter 253:
He really had gone to the hospital. Harold, the man who had cared for me and protected me, was truly dead.
“No… no, that can’t be true…”
The tears burst out at once, pouring down without control.
Only a few days ago, Harold had come to see me, full of life and in perfect health. He had held my hand with a smile and said he would live long enough to see his great-grandchild born and hold the baby in his own arms.
How could he be gone just like that?
I could not keep sitting there another second. I threw off the blanket, got out of bed, and shouted to the servants, “Get the car ready! I’m going to the hospital! I have to see Harold!”
“Please, you need to calm down!” A servant rushed in, panic all over her face. “The Alpha gave strict instructions for you to stay home, rest well, and not go anywhere.”
“Move!” I shoved past her, my voice slicing through the room beneath the crushing force of my grief. “That’s my family! He’s dead, and I have to see him one last time!”
My fingers shook as I dialed Ethan’s number.

The second he answered, I broke down so badly I could hardly force the words out. “Ethan… send someone to take me there. I need to see Harold. If you won’t, then I’ll walk. Even if it takes me the whole night, I still have to see him!”
The line stayed silent for a long while, and then Ethan finally spoke, his voice hoarse with exhaustion. “Stay at home. I’ll come get you myself.”
Half an hour later, Ethan hurried into the bedroom, bringing a rush of cold air in with him.
The moment he saw me standing unsteadily at the top of the stairs, his expression darkened. He crossed the space at once and lifted me into his arms.
His hold on me was firm, almost fiercely protective.
“How could Harold just be gone all of a sudden?” My fingers knotted in his collar, and my tears soaked through his shirt. “He promised me…”
Ethan stiffened. He lowered his gaze, hiding the turmoil in his eyes, and replied in a low voice, “It was not sudden. After the last time he was admitted, the doctor told me in private that Grandpa’s condition was already getting worse. At most, he had three months left. He hid it from you because he didn’t want you carrying that burden.”
What he said calmed me a little, but I still couldn’t stop crying.
So Harold had been suffering through all of it. He had been using the time he had left to stay with me.
Ethan took me out to the car, fastened my seatbelt with care, and spread a blanket across my legs.
“Lianne, for the baby and for Grandpa’s final wish, you have to hold yourself together.” His hand moved gently through my hair, and his voice was achingly soft. “More than anything, Harold wanted you and the child to be safe.”
The car raced straight to the funeral home’s entrance.
