Chapter 255:
Ethan moved through it all like a man who never stopped, receiving visitors without rest and handling pack affairs one after another.
Dark shadows lay beneath his eyes, and the exhaustion hanging over him was painful to look at.
Among the crowd, I saw Adrian. He still wore that same unreadable expression as he approached, gave a slight nod, and quietly expressed his condolences.
I returned the nod out of courtesy, too worn out to say anything else.
That night, the Valhalla was unusually silent, with only the faint flicker of candlelight stirring in the stillness.
I knelt on a cushion, my eyes shut, praying for Harold.
Then, a warm piece of clothing settled over my shoulders, and Ethan’s low voice sounded by my ear.
“That’s enough, Lianne. You need to rest and eat.”
“I’m not hungry,” I answered in a raspy voice, my eyes remaining closed.

“If Grandpa were here, he would never let you wear yourself down like this, and he definitely wouldn’t let you risk the health of his great-grandchild.” He used Harold against me, his tone steady and impossible to argue with.
Before I had the chance to object, he leaned down and gathered me into his arms.
I was far too worn out to fight back, so I let him carry me down the long hallway to the lounge in the back.
He placed me on the couch, brought over a bowl of porridge, cooled a spoonful with his breath, and raised it to my mouth.
“Have a little, for the baby.”
When I looked into his reddened eyes, I found myself parting my lips without thinking. He fed me so carefully that, before I realized it, I had eaten several pastries and half a bowl of porridge.
When I was done, he eased me back against the couch and tucked a warm blanket over me.
“You should get some rest too,” I said quietly, watching how worn out he looked.
He said nothing and only stretched out beside me along the edge of the couch. The couch was too narrow, and half his body was left hanging off the side.
“Shift over a little. Don’t fall,” I said, moving aside to make more room for him.
“Stop talking and go to sleep,” he muttered before shutting his eyes, his voice thick with exhaustion.
The lounge was washed in dim light. As I listened to his breathing so near and stared at the tired lines of his face, the cold, rigid barrier around my heart seemed to split slightly in that moment, and a strange warmth I had not felt in a very long time quietly rose inside me.
Lianne’s POV
When I opened my eyes the next morning, the familiar ceiling of my bedroom came into view first.
The bed beneath me was still warm and inviting. It was obvious Ethan had brought me back from the Valhalla to the villa while I was asleep, all without my knowing.
I jerked upright and shot a glance at the clock on the wall, panic thudding hard inside my chest.
