Chapter 261

Chapter 261:
From the other side came nothing but complete silence, not a single reply.
An odd sense of worry stirred inside me. Had she cried herself to sleep? Or was she shutting me out on purpose?
A nameless fear crawled down my spine. I hastily pulled out the spare key and twisted the lock with force.
The instant the door swung open, I froze where I stood, as though a bolt of lightning had split through me. All the warmth drained from my body, and it felt as though I had been plunged into solid ice.
Lianne was huddled beside the door, her face pale as paper, her eyes shut, utterly motionless.
But what made my eyes flare wide in terror was the red soaking through her pale lounge pants, and the glaring pool of blood on the floor looked horrifying beneath the moonlight.
“Lianne!”
My eyes narrowed, and my mind went completely blank. It took me a full two seconds to catch my breath again, and I lunged forward in panic to gather her into my arms.
She weighed almost nothing, as though she might vanish into thin air at any second.

“Wake up, Lianne! Don’t do this to me!” I cried out her name in a ragged voice as I ran downstairs, but she gave no response.
Only the terrifying chill of her skin told me her life was slipping away by the second.
I buckled her into the passenger seat and drove my foot down on the accelerator. The car shot toward the hospital like a beast loosed from its chains.
“Just hold on, please. Lianne, we’re almost there…” I clutched the steering wheel hard, my eyes stinging with tears.
The red light above the emergency room burned over me like a cold, mocking stare that never blinked.
I remained in the hallway, Lianne’s blood smeared across my clothes and my hands.
It had already dried, clinging to my skin and giving off that hopeless, metallic stench.
The moment I thought about the child we might have already lost, and the sheer devastation on Lianne’s face, the fury inside me finally broke loose.
I whirled around and drove my fist straight into the solid wall.
I hit it over and over, like a man possessed.
As an Alpha, I healed far faster than ordinary werewolves, but I intentionally refused to let my body protect itself.
The flesh across my knuckles tore apart, exposing bone beneath. Blood ran down the wall, smearing it with gruesome streaks.
Every time the wounds started closing, I smashed my fist into it again with even more force. Only that savage pain could dull, even a little, the guilt eating through my chest.
I sagged against the wall and slid down until I was sitting on the floor, crushed beneath guilt and regret.
What had I done?
How could I have shut a pregnant woman, who had just lost the only person she held dear and whose pregnancy was already fragile, inside that freezing room by herself?
It was all because of me.
