Chapter 264:
Frank was silent for a brief moment, then bent closer and whispered, “Listen, the baby is safe.”
My entire body jerked like I had been struck by lightning. I threw my eyes wide open and seized his sleeve hard, my fingers trembling uncontrollably. “What did you say? Say it again!”
“The baby is safe.” Frank clasped my hand tightly, his gaze unwavering. “The doctor is a friend of mine. I asked him to keep it from Ethan. Everyone believes you lost the baby. You can’t feel the baby’s presence because the medicine is taking effect.”
A rush of joy tore straight through the darkness inside me. I covered my mouth as tears spilled down without restraint.
“Thank you… Thank you, Frank,” I choked out.
It felt unbelievable that the baby had survived.
Frank settled back by the bedside, and his tone became grave and blunt. “Thankfully, the baby is strong. Otherwise, this could have ended much worse. Harold is gone now, and no one can keep you chained anymore. You can leave Ethan behind and become yourself again. He’s selfish, and he isn’t worthy of you.”
I looked up at the ceiling, and the chaos inside me slowly gave way to a kind of calm I had never known before.

The baby was safe. This was the final chance the Moon Goddess had given me.
I could take my child and leave, vanishing completely from Ethan’s world.
But when I thought about everything I had suffered these past few days, and about Harold’s death, a deep cold still spread through me, leaving me empty of strength.
“Don’t forget your father.” Frank’s voice turned heavier when he saw me stay quiet. “If he were still alive, he would never want to see you like this, surrendering to despair. He gave his life to protect you so you could live on well. Harold died with regrets, all for the sake of your future. You have a child. You cannot collapse now.”
I shut my eyes and drew in a long, deep breath. When I opened them again, they held nothing but resolve. “I know, Frank. I will leave. I will leave for good.”
Not long after Frank walked out, I forced my weak body upright.
Since the baby was still alive, I had to eat for its sake.
I lifted the bowl of oatmeal, now slightly thickened from sitting, and mechanically brought spoonful after spoonful to my mouth.
But after only a few bites, my stomach twisted hard, and a fierce wave of nausea surged over me.
I shoved the covers aside and staggered out of bed without even slipping on shoes, then bent over the trash can and retched.
I threw up so hard that it felt as though my insides were being torn loose.
“Lianne!”
The door burst wide open, and Ethan charged in.
He hurried to my side and lightly patted my back, his gentleness almost absurd.
He helped me back onto the bed and passed me a glass of water.
