Chapter 272:
Joy exploded in his eyes like sunlight breaking through storm clouds, desperate and blinding.
He reached toward my hand instinctively, fingers trembling with uncertainty, but I slipped away just before contact.
“I’ll wait for you at the villa in three days.” With that, I turned and left the hospital room.
Three days would give me enough time to tie up loose ends and craft the farewell perfectly.
Three days later, the sunset turned the villa’s walls a fiery orange-red.

When Ethan pushed open the front door, I was in the kitchen, apron tied snug around my waist, completely absorbed in my task.
The sound of his footsteps made me whirl around, a bright, long-missed smile lighting my face.
“You’re back?” I called out.
Ethan froze, eyes wide, unable to believe this warm, domestic scene before him.
He hurried toward me, gaze intense, almost burning.
I held up the freshly plated steak in my hands, presenting it proudly.
“Ethan, look! I made this just for you. Do you like it?”
The aroma of the steak curled through the air, rich and savory, with the sharp bite of black pepper lingering between us.
Ethan’s Adam’s apple moved as he swallowed audibly.
The man, usually so precise and reserved, reached out with his fingers, plucked a potato from the plate, and popped it into his mouth.
“How is it? Does it taste good?” My voice trembled, palms slick with sweat as I watched him carefully.
He chewed deliberately, then slowly nodded, eyes soft and full of quiet affection. “It’s perfect!”
A blush of pride warmed my cheeks. “I told you, my cooking would win you over. Whatever you want in the future, I’ll make it for you.”
I lifted the plate, intending to carry it to the dining room, when suddenly a strong arm snaked around my waist.
“Ah!” I gasped as he lifted me effortlessly off the floor.
“Keep the plate steady. Don’t spill it,” he murmured near my ear, his voice low, warm, and soothing.
He carried me to the dining table with ease and gently set me into a chair.
Under my watchful eyes, he picked up the knife and fork and devoured the steak with fluid grace, leaving every scrap and drop of sauce gone.
Once he set the utensils down, Ethan reached across the table and took my hand, his smile radiant, unshakable. “Lianne, thank you. From now on, everything will only get better for us. I’ll make up for all I owe you, and I’ll be devoted solely to you.”
As I drank in his hopeful gaze and listened to the promises spilling from his lips, an overwhelming tide of emotion surged through me.
I pressed my hand to my mouth as tears leaked uncontrollably, unbidden.
This was a scene I had never dared to dream of.
I had imagined, countless times, that he might look at me with this kind of tenderness, love me without reservation.
But why did it have to come after all the pain, after we had torn everything between us apart?
