Chapter 279:
“What?” Brian’s voice cut sharply through the line, filled with unmistakable shock. “Lianne, this is the project you chased after. It’s at a pivotal stage. Why would you suddenly want to step away?”
I couldn’t reveal the truth, so I forced out a fabricated excuse. “My daughter’s health has been unstable lately. She needs constant attention. Commuting to the bay every day is exhausting. I don’t think I can keep it up.”
“That’s an easy fix!” Brian replied, his tone surprisingly accommodating. “The company can arrange a premium apartment for you by the bay and relocate your family there. Consider it a work-related arrangement. Lianne, the bonus on this project is enormous. Are you sure you want to walk away from that?”
I ground my teeth, searching for a compromise. “Could I avoid meeting the investors? I have some personal issues with Voss Group and don’t want to interact with their people.”
Brian paused briefly, then chuckled. “I was expecting something serious. Relax. Our main contact is Bridgeview Capital. A giant like Voss Group won’t bother sending people to supervise a small project like this. Besides…”
He hesitated, his tone lowering into a whisper of gossip. “I heard their CEO, Ethan Voss, has recently found a fated mate. They’ve been vacationing abroad, blissfully. He’s not focused on domestic business right now. He just sent a secretary for routine checks.”
“A fated mate?”

My grip on the phone loosened, almost letting it slip.
The old scar in my heart, long healed over, felt like it was being ripped open again, a dull, rotting ache spreading through me.
Ethan had moved on with someone else?
This was what I had longed for most, yet why did this news make the world suddenly feel absurd, even cruel?
I drew a steady breath and spoke quietly into the receiver. “Alright, I understand. I’ll continue to follow up.”
After hanging up, I sank into the chair, drained of strength.
With Ethan having found a new mate and letting the past go completely, I had nothing left to fear.
As long as Ruby remained well-hidden and this secret stayed safe, there would be no remaining ties between us.
Ethan’s POV:
On the highway, the black sedan cut through the gathering twilight like a stealthy streak of lightning.
“Alpha, following your orders, we’ve issued a final notice to Nexith Group. They have one week to settle the holdout matter.” Noah’s voice reached me through the mind link, precise and unwavering as always.
“Understood.” I sank back against the rear seat, eyes closed, my fingertips drifting idly over my palm.
“Nexith Group has provided the full dossier on the project manager. Should I forward it to you?” Noah asked after a brief pause, his tone cautious.
“No need.” I opened my eyes, staring at the blur of forest and road rushing past the window, my voice detached and unreadable. “This is Bridgeview Capital’s project. They can manage it on their own. I have no desire to waste time on such trivial affairs.”
The link stayed alive.
