Chapter 286:
Tracy stayed silent for a moment, then lowered her voice, mentioning someone far away. “And what about him? Are you going to leave him abroad forever? Living like this, constantly on edge, can’t last.”
My brows furrowed tightly, and a heavy sigh escaped me, carrying all the unease I had been holding in.
It was a buried pain, one I dared not examine too closely.
“Let’s wait a little longer.” I pressed my fingers to my temples. “Things are far too chaotic at the moment.”
Tracy laid a comforting hand on my shoulder. “Bring him back. We’ll figure out a safer plan. We can’t keep hiding like this forever.”
I nodded, glancing down at Ruby, who was tugging at my sleeve and giggling in my arms. I couldn’t bear to send them away so quickly.
“Stay for the next few days,” I decided. “I’ll reserve another room for you at the Time Hotel. From what I’ve seen, Voss Group’s people are busy at the construction site. I haven’t heard of anyone coming here, so it should be safe.”

Tracy’s face brightened with relief. I looked at her and spoke sincerely. “Thank you for looking after Ruby while I’ve been caught up with work.”
“No need to thank me. Ruby’s such a lovely girl,” she replied with a teasing laugh.
Watching her so relaxed and cheerful, I felt a pang of envy.
If only I could be that open, that unburdened by secrets, would I still feel this exhaustion every day?
Just as I settled Ruby on the couch, my phone buzzed with an urgent call from Alex.
“Lianne! There’s a problem! That holdout took the money but then refused to comply. He’s causing a scene at the construction site, accusing us of fraud and demanding an extra two million dollars!”
I stiffened, my gaze hardening. I reassured Ruby quickly and told Tracy to take her to explore the nearby night market while I headed straight to the site with my assistant, Illa Green.
At the entrance to the construction site, the stocky man was shouting, fists flailing wildly, with curious workers gathering around to watch the commotion.
“Liars! You thieves! You said the entrance had been moved, but I just saw the plans, it’s still on my property!”
I swung the car door open and stepped out, my professional attire lending me an air of authority. I didn’t flinch at the shouting men surrounding me.
“Enough yelling,” I said, my voice sharp, carrying an edge that cut through the chaos.
The man charged toward me, fists raised. “Are you the director? Compensate me, or no one works today!”
“You signed the contract and accepted the payment. From that moment, your claim to the land ended.” I locked eyes with him, my tone frosty. “How the project is designed is confidential. It’s not something for outsiders like you to interfere with.”
“This is a scam! You’re defrauding me!” he spat.
