Chapter 290

Chapter 290:
She was crouched in front of a stall selling helium balloons, and those familiar little pigtails bobbed as she moved.
The curve of her soft cheek in profile looked like a cream puff that made people want to pinch it. And those bright, shining eyes… She was the spitting image of Lianne from three years ago, who had always looked up at me with eyes full of stars.
I let out a mocking smile at myself and rubbed my throbbing temples.
I really had lost my mind.
I had come here to rest, to finally put that cold-hearted woman behind me and begin again. Yet now, just glimpsing a child on the street was enough to make me see things.
When I looked over again, the little girl had already been taken away by someone in an oversized hoodie and vanished into the crowd.
“Go back to the hotel.” I gave the order coldly, my voice carrying a trace of disgust at my own weakness.
The car gradually pulled away from the night market, while the driver kept enthusiastically talking about plans for the next day.
I rested back against the rear seat and answered him absentmindedly, but inside, there was only a hollow stillness.

For the last three years, I had made myself into a perfectly efficient machine for making money.
All at once, with this break from work dropping into my lap, I felt like a man stripped of direction, completely unmoored, letting a stranger decide where I would go next.
The car came to a stop at an intersection beneath the harsh red light.
Without much thought, I angled my head and looked out through the window.
In that split second, everything around me seemed to lock in place.
A trace of scent, light but terrifyingly familiar, one that had long since sunk into my bones, slipped through the gap of the car window and struck me head-on.
It was the smell of a forest washed by rain. It was Lianne’s scent.
The wolf inside me exploded with a deafening roar, releasing three years of buried joy and fury all at once.
I straightened up so fast it was almost violent, my gaze snapping to the black Audi in the lane beside us.
The woman behind the wheel tilted her head slightly, as though glancing at the rearview mirror.
The streetlights sketched out the flawless line of her profile, the straight bridge of her nose, her lips pressed together…
It was her.
Not a delusion, not some dream.
Lianne, the woman I had spent the last three years searching for, the woman I had believed was dead in some forgotten place or lost forever in this world, was sitting less than twenty meters away from me now.
My blood surged hot, and my heart hammered so hard it felt ready to rupture.
Three years of despair, fury, yearning, and possession so intense it had nearly driven me mad crashed together into a tide strong enough to ruin everything.
The red light started blinking.
Three. Two. One.
