Chapter 295:
Then, she casually added, “But it seemed like the little girl got quite the scolding. She slipped out without a word and scared her mommy terribly…”
Once I knew the little girl had safely returned to her mother, the tightness in my heart finally eased.
“I’m glad that she’s alright,” I said.
I handed the heavy bag of candy and the bill to the receptionist. “Please give these to her, and tell her they’re from the gentleman who promised not to take her money.”
“Of course, sir.” The receptionist accepted the bag, then could not help remarking, “You’re a kind and handsome gentleman. The little girl’s mommy is very beautiful as well. She has been staying here for more than a week.”

She paused, as though suddenly noticing something, and said, “Oh, I didn’t realize it before, but that little girl really resembles you. If I didn’t know her father wasn’t with them, I might actually think she was your daughter.”
I halted in my tracks, my heart jolting as though it had taken a heavy blow.
The little girl looked like me?
A fierce impulse rose in me, urging me to rush upstairs and see the girl’s mother at once.
But it did not take long for me to realize that I was invading a stranger’s privacy, all because of an offhand remark from the receptionist.
I truly had lost my mind.
Had I become so desperate for Lianne that every woman made me think of her, and every child seemed like mine?
I forcibly reined in my thoughts, turning and entering the elevator.
Yet even after returning to my room, with night already deep outside, sleep would not come.
I drank one glass of red wine after another, my mind crowded with the profile I had seen at the intersection.
After three years, I had believed I was detached enough. And yet, nothing more than a blurred silhouette had broken through every defense I had built.
I pulled out my phone and opened the mind link.
“Noah.” My voice came out rough, edged with resolve. “Forget that I saw Lianne today. There’s no need to investigate her.”
Noah was obviously caught off guard by my words. “Are you sure about that?”
“Book me a flight to leave Brinewick for tomorrow at noon.” I shut my eyes, concealing the turmoil in them.
I had to end all of these improper feelings while I still had the strength to stop myself, before that crazed possessiveness swallowed my reason whole.
Lianne’s POV:
By the time I brought Ruby back, Tracy had already claimed the sofa and fallen into a deep sleep, a faint snore slipping out now and then.
I didn’t have the heart to wake her, so I carried Ruby straight into the bathroom as quietly as I could.
Once she was cleaned up, I wrapped a towel around her head and gently wiped her soft curls dry. “Next time, don’t wander off by yourself, alright?” I murmured, my voice carrying a hint of lingering fear. “When I came back and couldn’t find you, I was so scared.”
