Chapter 300:
“A kind stranger?” My heart lurched. Ignoring the pounding pain in my head, I pressed anxiously. “Do you have any way to contact him? I want to thank him in person.”
“By the time I arrived, he was already leaving. I only caught a glimpse of his back.” Alex scratched his head and tried to remember. “He was a tall, lean man in a black suit that looked perfectly tailored, and his presence was unbelievably imposing. Oh, and he almost ripped those troublemakers to pieces.”
A tall, lean man. A black suit.
And that low, gentle voice that had echoed over and over in my ears just before I lost consciousness.
It all felt too familiar.
Far too much like Ethan, the man I had buried deep into my memory.
But the instant that thought surfaced, I crushed it down.
It was simply impossible.
Ethan should be overseas by now, in that estate overflowing with flowers, holding his new mate’s hand as they prepared for their wedding.
How could he possibly appear in Brinewick, a place so remote, and just happen to be the one who had saved me?
I steadied my racing heartbeat and asked Alex as casually as I could, “Was there any word from the investment firm today? Did anyone come for the inspection?”

“No. Bridgeview Capital said the schedule had been postponed.” Alex shook his head.
I closed my eyes and laughed at myself inwardly.
So I was really overthinking things.
After all, when people were pushed to the brink of danger, they would often instinctively think about the person they longed for the most.
That “don’t be scared” had been nothing more than a desperate illusion born in a moment of terror.
Ethan’s POV:
Inside the executive suite at the Time Hotel, a suitcase was positioned neatly beside the door.
I sat on the sofa with a laptop resting across my knees, reviewing the final points of a new project with Noah through an encrypted video call.
On the screen, Noah looked distracted. After hesitating for what felt like forever, he finally worked up the courage to ask, “Your flight is at noon. Would you like to… reschedule it?”
My fingers stilled briefly on the touchpad before I lifted my eyes to the camera.
My expression was calm, so calm that it almost seemed hollow.
“There’s no need for that,” I said.
“Understood. About the hospital…” Noah swallowed hard before going on. “The doctor said Ms. Riley’s injuries are serious. Although her life isn’t in danger, she needs rest. Should I arrange for someone to continue monitoring her recovery?”
“Noah,” I interjected coldly, my voice stripped of all feeling. “Yesterday, I merely happened to pass by and help an employee of a business partner. If it had been someone else, I would have done exactly the same. This matter ends here. Don’t bring it up again.”
I deliberately downplayed the concern that had nearly swallowed me whole, even though I knew every word was nothing but self-deception.
My mind kept replaying the scene from yesterday, when I had rescued Lianne at the construction site.
