Chapter 307

Chapter 307:
One of the women hesitated for a very long time before finally whispering, as though she were gambling everything on it, “It was… it was Lisa Wade from the Planning Department. She said she saw you in the hotel lobby with your daughter, and that the little girl looked a lot like the Alpha of the Thorn Pack, Ethan…”
My heart lurched, and an icy chill shot from my spine straight to the top of my head.
“I have nothing to do with him!”
The words flew out of my mouth, my voice so sharp that even I winced at how shrill it sounded.

In the very next second, I realized I had reacted too strongly.
The two women shrank back, suspicion flashing through their eyes.
I shoved down the turmoil raging inside me, drove my nails hard into my palms, and warned them in an icy voice, “Mind what you say. Don’t let me hear this kind of absurd rumor again. Get out.”
They rushed out of the restroom as though they were fleeing.
In that instant, all the strength seemed to leave my body. I could do nothing but brace myself against the sink and struggle to catch my breath.
My fingers shook so badly that I could not steady them, and cold sweat soaked through my back.
Three years had passed.
I had thought I had concealed everything well enough, and that as long as I never spoke of that man again, he would vanish from my life forever.
But I had forgotten that in this world, nothing was harder to hide than blood ties.
By the time I got back to the hotel, Tracy had already put Ruby to bed.
The moment she saw how shaken I looked and how pale my face was, she was startled and hurried over to hold my arm. “Lianne, what happened? Did those scumbags at the construction site give you trouble again?”
I forced out a bitter smile and shook my head, my voice rough. “Tracy, tomorrow morning, take Ruby and leave. Go back to the city where we live, or head straight to the airport.”
Tracy froze for a moment, but she did not press for answers. She only held my arm tighter, worry filling her face. “Alright, whatever you say. This place really isn’t safe.”
When my eyes fell on Ruby’s sleeping face, so painfully similar to Ethan’s, a deep ache spread through my chest.
Only when it came to my child could I still smile for real.
“Ruby was so excited about seeing her brother again that she couldn’t fall asleep earlier,” Tracy said softly.
The mention of Ruby’s brother eased the chaos inside me, if only a little.
As soon as this project was over, I would take them and leave for someplace far away.
When that day came, neither Ethan nor those rumors would be able to hurt us ever again.
Lianne’s POV:
The next morning, the sun blazed so fiercely that it hurt the eyes, flooding the dust-covered mesh around the construction site with a washed-out white glow.
I walked beside Alex, going over the details of the resort’s second development phase.
