Chapter 308:
Alex was obviously in a great mood, letting out a laugh before saying, “Lianne, if we manage to secure the commercial street project as well, I’ll seriously owe you big time. Truthfully, a smart and gorgeous woman like you is probably every man’s ideal in this company.”
I answered with a laugh, trying to brush aside the ridiculous gossip, “Alright, keep talking like that and I really might stop coming. Otherwise, the rumors around the office will only get worse. If my partner hears them, he might get jealous.”
Alex burst out laughing. “I understand. He is really a lucky guy.”
I smiled and was just about to glance toward the temporary office in front of us when I stopped dead.
The smile on my face turned rigid, and it felt like every drop of blood in me had gone still.
A short distance away, Brian was standing beneath a sunshade, and next to him was none other than Jeremy, Ethan’s closest friend, wearing that same careless smirk.

My heart dropped straight down. A slick, icy fear slithered through my entire body.
Almost without thinking, I spun around and tried to leave at once.
“Lianne!” Brian called out from behind me, and hurried footsteps followed right after.
He caught up in no time and stepped in front of me, his face full of confusion. “What happened? You look awful. Are you still feeling unwell?”
I balled my hands into fists, my nails biting hard into my palms, forcing myself to stay composed. I avoided his eyes. “No… I just suddenly remembered there’s something urgent waiting for me at home, so I won’t be joining the lunch meeting today. I’m sorry, Brian.”
“Are there any issues between you and Jeremy?” Brian had clearly noticed how odd I was behaving. He dropped his voice and said, “He’s a longtime friend of mine, and he’s here on behalf of the investors. If he did something to upset you, tell me, and I’ll have him apologize to you.”
My fingers locked even tighter, the veins on the back of my hands standing out.
I kept insisting that I truly had something urgent to handle, desperate to get out of this suffocating situation.
“Brian, let me speak with her alone.”
Jeremy’s voice drifted over, light on the surface but laced with ridicule.
By then, he had already walked over, a faint smile hanging on his lips, his eyes packed with probing intent.
“I have nothing to discuss with you,” I said flatly, without the slightest hesitation.
“Is that so?” Jeremy lifted a brow and tipped slightly closer, his voice dropping so low that only I could catch it. “Or would you rather let Brian stay and hear about your history? Like… what truly went on between you and that Alpha?”
His words stabbed into me like a venom-coated knife, hitting the exact place I was the weakest.
I went rigid at once, unable to move a single step.
I knew I was trapped.
I had never told Brian, or anyone in this place, about what had once existed between Ethan and me.
To them, I was only a woman raising a child and working hard at her job.
