Chapter 309:
If Brian found out I had once been Ethan’s mate, and that I had run away carrying his child… everything I had worked so hard to build in this town would collapse.
“I’ll speak to you. Over there.” I drew in a breath and pointed toward the vacant concrete frame of the unfinished building, my voice cold as ice.
Jeremy flashed Brian an “OK” sign, telling him to head to the restaurant first.
The moment Brian’s worried figure disappeared around the bend, I turned sharply and fixed Jeremy with a fierce glare.
“Jeremy, I walked away from Ethan three years ago, and I have never once wanted to return. Why are you threatening me now? What exactly do you want?”
He pulled out a cigarette, lit it, and took a deep drag, sounding utterly casual. “Nothing. I’m just curious. Curious how a woman like you managed to wrap someone like Brian around your finger in only three years.”
The mockery in his voice was evident.
“Damn it!” Anna inside me snarled in rage, her claws nearly breaking free, itching to rip that disgusting mouth apart.
But I forced the impulse down and held on to the last bit of reason I had left. “My relationship with him is purely professional. If you think my being here threatens your investment, then go ahead and tell him to dismiss me right now.”

Jeremy breathed out a ring of smoke and narrowed his eyes. “You really don’t want to go back? You’re not pretending to be indifferent while waiting for Ethan to come back to you?”
Lianne’s POV:
I shot back, “Why are you in such a hurry to grill me? What exactly are you afraid of? Scared I’ll destroy Ethan’s shining future?”
Jeremy went quiet for a second, his gaze shifting elsewhere.
I eased my voice and spoke slowly, as if I were steadying my own heart. “I know you want Ethan far away from me now, but that has nothing to do with me. I have never wanted to go back to him. I only want to live in peace with my children.”
Jeremy tapped the ash from his cigarette and nearly burned his own fingers.
He narrowed his eyes and suddenly threw out a shocking line. “Have you heard that Ethan has found a new mate?”
My heart stumbled for a beat, but I gave a calm nod. “Yes.”
“You are not affected by that in the slightest?” He fixed his eyes on mine, trying to catch even the smallest crack in my composure.
“No.”
The word left my mouth clean and firm, but only I knew that the instant it did, a sharp and bitter pain had already knotted itself deep inside my chest.
Jeremy let out a mocking sneer, the cigarette still caught between his fingers, his voice thick with open sarcasm. “You really are heartless. No wonder Ethan fell for you back then. That cruel streak of yours hasn’t changed at all.”
