Chapter 310

Chapter 310:
I drew my brows together, keeping my face unreadable as I looked at him, my voice cold. “Jeremy, what exactly are you trying to do? Say it plainly. I don’t have time to stand here revisiting the past with you.”
He gave a careless shrug, looking utterly at ease as he slowly breathed out a ring of smoke. “Nothing. Just making conversation. But I thought maybe you’d want to ask who Ethan’s so-called fiancée is.”
A cold laugh rose inside me.
Who else could Ethan possibly marry except Ivy, the woman he had always treasured the most?
Even if he had once told me, three years ago, that he would send Ivy away, three years was more than enough time. Long enough for old feelings between them to come alive again, and long enough for him to forget every promise he had once made to me.
“I don’t need to know,” I answered evenly, doing my best to keep my voice from wavering. “Who he chooses to marry is his business. It has nothing to do with me.”
Jeremy seemed angered by how little I cared. He gave a cold laugh, then pulled out his phone and dialed Ethan’s number right in front of me.
Ethan, who had always been slow to answer Jeremy’s calls before, picked up this time after only two rings, and the voice I knew more intimately than my own came through the speaker.

“Hello?”
My fingers went stiff. It felt as though a fine steel needle had driven straight through my heart, and a sharp ache spread through me at once.
Jeremy deliberately switched the call to speaker, shot me a taunting look, and said, “Ethan, guess who I just ran into in Brinewick? She’s standing right in front of me now, and I think you’d be very interested…”
He lifted a brow at me, mischief flashing in his eyes.
Without meaning to, I fixed my gaze on the phone screen, and in that instant, time seemed to stand still.
This was the closest I had been to Ethan in three years, close enough that I could almost picture the cold set of his face as he held the phone.
All I wanted was to leave now, to run from this suffocating place that had every nerve in me pulled tight.
After several seconds of complete silence, Ethan’s voice came again.
It was even colder than before, edged with clear irritation.
“I have no interest in that.”
The instant those words landed, the call ended without warning, leaving behind nothing but a harsh string of beeps.
Jeremy’s smile froze, and he stared at the phone in open disbelief.
I drew in a breath, forcing down the storm of bitterness inside me, and said to Jeremy in a cold voice, “Satisfied now? Let me go. Once this project is finished, I intend to leave the country. I can even hand in my resignation right now. I won’t create any trouble for you, so please… keep this a secret. Don’t let Ethan know where I am.”
