Chapter 311

Chapter 311:
Lately, I had been crossing paths with too many people from the past. More and more of them were saying Ruby resembled Ethan. I lived with fear hanging over me every single day, terrified that Ethan would suddenly show up and take her away from me.
All I wanted was to get away as fast as I could with Ruby and Silas, far from all of this.
Lianne’s POV:
Jeremy looked like he was about to drag my history with Ethan back into the conversation again, but I cut him off at once, saying, “There is no possibility left between Ethan and me anymore! You saw it with your own eyes. He wants nothing to do with me, and I have no desire to be involved with him, either. I have no wish to destroy the happy future he has with Ivy.”
Jeremy went still for a moment, his lips pressed together as he looked at me with an unreadable expression. “He’s not with Ivy. Ethan said he would never, not in this life, marry the person who once hurt you.”
Those words slammed into my heart like a heavy blow.
My mind emptied in an instant, and my chest tightened so badly that I could barely breathe.

Ethan would not marry Ivy? Because of me?
When he saw the shock written all over my face, Jeremy let out a mocking sneer. “Lianne, you really are something. Back then, you had Ethan completely out of his mind over you, and now, even someone like Brian has fallen for you. What kind of special charm do you have?”
Forcing down the chaos raging inside me, I said in an icy voice, “Are you finished? Whatever existed between Ethan and me ended a long time ago. I don’t need to care about your mockery, and I don’t need to care about who he chooses to marry.”
I knew Jeremy was testing me for Ethan’s sake. To make him give up for good, and to protect the last shred of my pride, I chose to be mercilessly direct. “I am happy with my mate now. You can ask Brian if you want. Even if Ethan were standing in front of me this very second, I would still choose my mate without a moment of hesitation.”
I held Jeremy’s gaze without flinching, my voice firm.
This was the only way he would believe I had truly let go, and maybe then, he would finally stop bothering me.
I did not go back to the construction site, and I had no strength left to say goodbye to Alex. I went straight to the hotel instead.
The moment I pushed open the door, I dropped onto the bed without even taking off my bag.
The room was quiet, broken only by the low murmur of the central air conditioner, yet Ethan’s cold words kept circling in my ears, refusing to disappear.
“I have no interest in that.”
Those few simple words felt like dull, rusted blades, sawing again and again through the tenderest place in my heart.
Truthfully, even after three years of severing every connection to him, I could not keep lying to myself, I missed him.
