Chapter 317:
“Yeah. Things are basically settled in Brinewick.” Jeremy sounded faintly amused. “Are you personally checking in on me?”
After hesitating for a long while, I finally lowered my voice and forced myself to sound casual. “How is Lianne’s condition now?”
“She’s perfectly fine.” Jeremy gave a short snort, obviously enjoying my discomfort. “Her work is going smoothly, and her boss Brian is fussing over her day and night. Oh, and she told me herself that she has a new mate now, and they’re doing wonderfully. She said you shouldn’t interfere with her happy life.”
“A new mate?”
My mind emptied for a brief second. Then, the wolf inside me erupted awake.
A savage wave of possessiveness and jealousy tore through me like a beast crashing against the bars of its cage.
I wanted to rip Lianne’s new mate to pieces, drag her back to my side, and ask her how she could forget everything between us so quickly.
“Ethan, listen to my advice. Just let it go. She has already begun a new life. Why do you—”
I severed the mind link before Jeremy could finish speaking.
A new life.

Those words landed like a hard slap across my face, burning hot against my skin.
I had told myself countless times to let go. But the moment I heard from someone else’s mouth that she had begun a new life with another man, I realized that I could never truly accept it.
Just as I was sinking deeper into disgust for myself, a sharp ringtone suddenly rang out from inside my desk drawer.
It was not my regular phone, but the one I had secretly bought from the driver so I could pretend to be him.
I yanked the drawer open and checked the phone. There was a new message from Lianne.
“Hello, the car has been fixed. Here are the invoice and the detailed charges. After subtracting the repair fee, I’ll send the remaining amount back to you.”
A photo of her holding the invoice was attached.
My shaking fingers opened the image and enlarged it.
I never even looked at the figures on the invoice. My eyes stayed locked on the hand holding it, catching sight of a small wound that still had not healed.
My heart tightened all at once.
Anxiousness, excitement, and a strange nervousness swept over me together, making me feel like an inexperienced boy receiving his very first message from the girl he liked.
After three years, this was the first time she had ever taken the initiative to text me.
Another message from her appeared. “Hello? Did you get my message?”
In a panic, I quickly typed “Hello” onto the screen, then stopped and thought better of it, afraid the tone might sound too cold, so I awkwardly added a smiling emoji.
Not long after, Lianne transferred the money.
I did not even check the amount before hurriedly replying, “Alright.”
She answered with a polite smiling emoji.
I stared at the screen, my thoughts spinning as I searched for something, anything, to keep the conversation going. “Okay,” I replied.
