Chapter 320:
This kind of unquestioning praise, clearly influenced by Brian’s feelings for me, made me deeply uncomfortable, yet in a room full of people like this, I had no idea how to put a stop to it.
After the meeting ended, I deliberately stopped Alex before he could leave, keeping my voice calm. “Alex, you don’t need to keep highlighting my opinions like that at work. We’re coworkers, and too much special attention will only create unnecessary misunderstandings.”
Alex laughed, obviously not taking me seriously and clearly assuming I didn’t mean what I just said. “Oh, Lianne, we’re friends! Of course we should look out for each other!”
Looking at that teasing expression on his face, as if he were silently telling me he already knew I had Brian’s support, I could only press my fingers to my temple in frustration.
Worn out, I went back to the temporary office at the construction site. The instant I pushed open the door, I stopped cold.
In the middle of the once roomy office, a brand-new and tastefully designed desk stood.
Before I could call the administration to ask about it, Brian came in, carrying two beautifully packed lunch boxes.
He was dressed casually today, and that familiar warm smile was still on his face. “Done with work? I drove for more than an hour to pick up these local specialties. Eat them while they’re still hot.”

I had no easy way to refuse, so I thanked him and took them from him.
“What’s going on with that desk?” I lifted a hand and pointed at the desk that clearly did not belong here.
“That?” Brian dropped into the swivel chair behind the new desk, gave it a light spin, and spoke in an easy tone. “The resort project has reached a crucial stage. As the investors’ representative, I think it’s necessary for me to follow the progress closely at all times. So from now on, I’ll be working in this office with you. You wouldn’t mind, right?”
I parted my lips, ready to object, but before I could get a word out, he threw out a piece of news that left me with no room to refuse the arrangement.
Lianne’s POV:
“Next week, I need you to go to the Queen District on a business trip and carry out due diligence for a commercial property project,” Brian said, the usual smile on his face disappearing as his expression grew serious. “If this deal is finalized, I’ll make sure your name is included on the contract. It will be a major asset to your professional record.”
Queen District.
The name alone made my fingers shake faintly.
That was the place where I was born, and where I first crossed paths with Ethan.
There were far too many memories buried there, all tied to a past I had no desire to speak of again.
But then I thought about the chaos that had been surrounding me in Brinewick lately. Jeremy’s deliberate provocation and Brian pressing closer and closer had left me feeling suffocated.
A change of place might actually give me room to breathe.
