Chapter 321:
Besides, the generous commission and the chance to have my name attached to the project were exactly the leverage I needed for my plan to take my children abroad and start over.
“Alright, I’ll go.” I finally gave a nod. “Send me the project materials. I’ll get ready beforehand.”
Brian smiled with satisfaction, rose to his feet beside me, and said in a gentle voice, “Take care of yourself. I wanted to accompany you, but next week, I have to meet with some elders in my family, so I can’t go with you. If anything happens, call me.”
I watched him leave, then leaned back in my chair with a quiet sense of relief.

Night settled over Brinewick, and only scattered lights flickered outside the window.
I returned to the hotel and took a hot shower, washing away the dust and weariness clinging to me.
After finishing a video call with my daughter, who was in another city, I felt a little lighter.
I opened my laptop and started reviewing the new project files Brian had sent me.
The work I needed to do was not especially difficult. The main task was to verify the licenses and qualification documents of several partner companies so that any hidden legal risks could be ruled out in advance.
This kind of careful, detail-heavy work had always been what I did best. Still, the moment I thought about going to the Queen District, an uneasy feeling still rose in me.
Before getting too deep into the documents, I decided to order a coffee to keep myself awake.
While scrolling through my phone, I suddenly remembered that the driver from before still needed the original invoice, so I opened our chat and sent him a message.
“Sir, sorry to trouble you. I’m leaving Brinewick and will be away for some time. If you need the original invoice right away, you can come pick it up at the construction site, or I can leave it for you at the hotel’s front desk.”
I had only just finished placing my coffee order when his reply came through, slower than usual. “Where are you going?”
I paused for a second, finding his curiosity about my plans a little strange, then answered casually, “The Queen District. I don’t know when I’ll return.”
“No rush. I’ll wait.”
I went still for a moment at those few short words, my grip tightening around my phone.
For some reason, I could not shake the sense that this driver did not feel like an ordinary middle-aged cab driver at all.
He hardly ever spoke, and when he did, there was a distant coolness in his tone, every sentence ending with a period, every word carrying an unmistakable air of authority.
The way he spoke reminded me far too much of Ethan.
I lightly smacked my forehead and scolded myself for thinking that.
How could I connect Ethan to some random stranger?
I wondered, with a hint of self-mockery, whether Jeremy might let something slip after he got back.
If Ethan found out that I was “doing well” here and had even found myself a “new mate,” what would he think?
