Chapter 324:
“It’s just me.” He paused for a moment, as though he was choosing how to phrase it. “The trip isn’t exactly for sightseeing. A friend of mine is considering putting money into a ride-hailing app there, so he asked me to take a look at the area myself. He wants details about traffic conditions and how the market works.”
That caught my attention right away. It was related to my work.
Whenever something like this came up, I couldn’t help getting pulled into it.
“A ride-hailing app?” I straightened up and spoke without holding back. “The market there is already close to being full, but there’s still room in high-end business services. If your friend wants a chance, he’ll need to focus on standing out from what’s already there. It’s just a pity…”
My voice dropped slightly as I continued, “I’ll be going abroad soon, so I won’t be involved in local projects anymore. If things were different, I’d really want to see what kind of product your friend could build.”
The moment I finished speaking, a loud crash came from the other end of the line.

It sounded like glass hitting the ground and breaking apart.
Right after that, his breathing turned uneven, and when he spoke again, the calm tone he had been keeping was gone.
“You’re going abroad? Where are you going, and when?”
Lianne’s POV:
For a brief moment, I held back before giving the driver an answer. “I’ll leave once the project I’m handling is done. Why are you asking?”
Silence followed on the line, stretching longer than expected, until he finally spoke again. “It’s nothing. I’ll let you rest. Good night.”
Once the call ended, I kept looking at the dark screen, unable to shake off the odd feeling that lingered in me.
Something about the way he reacted stayed with me. The urgency in his voice when I mentioned leaving the country felt too familiar, almost like it came from someone I used to know.
Still, I didn’t have the energy to think too much about it. After washing up, I went straight to bed and fell asleep.
The next morning came with the sound of my phone ringing, and Brian’s name lit up the screen.
“Lianne, I’m downstairs at your hotel entrance. Come down for a bit,” he said. His voice sounded rough, but there was clear excitement underneath it.
Not knowing what he wanted, I went down to meet him. When I reached the lobby entrance, I saw him standing there, holding a porcelain pot carefully in both hands.
As I walked closer, he lifted the lid as if showing something important, and the smell of soup spread out.
“I spent the whole night learning how to make this for you,” he said. Then, he showed me his hands without much thought, the red marks and blisters evident. “Jeremy told me Ethan used to cook for you. If he could do it, then I can, too.”
His expression made it clear he was waiting for a great reaction, but all I felt was shock. I wasn’t moved at all.
“Brian, you don’t have to go this far,” I said quietly, and I couldn’t hide the resignation in my voice. “There’s no need to compare yourself to Ethan.”
