Chapter 325:
Even after everything Ethan had put me through, I still couldn’t let go of him.
For a second, Brian’s face went stiff, but then his eyes hardened with resolve. “Whether I compare myself to him or not, that’s my decision. You don’t have to decide anything now. Just pay attention to me. Stay safe on your trip, and send me a message when you arrive.”
After saying that, he turned around and walked away, leaving the soup for me, as if he had already done what he had come for.
By ten in the morning, I had everything packed and made my way to the airport.
When I reached the counter to get my boarding pass, the staff greeted me politely, saying, “Ms. Riley, your seat has been upgraded to first class.”
For a moment, I was surprised. Then, Brian’s message came through. “The company will cover your expenses. Business trips can wear you out, so take care of yourself. And tell me, how was the soup this morning?”
I answered, “It tasted good. Thanks. But don’t make it again. Your hands got burned, and it still doesn’t compare to what Ethan used to make.”

I said that on purpose, hoping he’d stop. Instead, his reply came right away. “That’s fine. I’ll keep working on it.”
Looking at his message, I let out a sigh.
There was no denying it; Brian was a charming man.
Money wasn’t an issue for him, he paid attention to details, and he was even willing to learn how to cook for me.
Most women would have given in to someone like him easily.
Yet I understood something others wouldn’t see. What he felt for me wasn’t simple. It wasn’t something unpleasant, but it still made me hesitate.
Being friends with him felt right, and I couldn’t let our relationship go beyond that.
More than once, I had thought about giving Ruby and Silas a complete family.
But Ethan had shaken everything in my life in a way no one else ever could. No one after him could make me feel the same way again.
So in the end, I stopped thinking about the idea.
Besides, my children were enough for me.
Ruby’s identity had to stay hidden, and I couldn’t afford to let my kids get pulled into the conflicts of high society.
No matter what Brian did, I could only keep my distance from him.
For this trip to the Queen District, I brought along two assistants I trusted, Bella and Oscar.
Back when I was still at the Voss Group, Bella had already been working under me.
When I chose to leave everything behind three years ago and step away from Ethan, she resigned without hesitation and followed me.
That kind of loyalty stayed with me, and I had kept her by my side since then.
