Chapter 328:
I massaged my throbbing forehead and quietly refused, saying, “No. I’ll stay until she finishes her IV drip.”
An uncomfortable silence lingered between us afterward.
Oscar kept stealing glances at me, cautious and restrained, yet the concern in his eyes was far too obvious to ignore.
I understood what those looks probably meant, but under such circumstances, pretending not to notice felt easier for both of us.
To ease the awkwardness, we started chatting casually about family and personal matters.
The moment I mentioned having a mate already, Oscar’s expression stiffened in visible shock.
“I’ve been bonded for years. My mate… treats me very well,” I said evenly, my tone so steady that it sounded convincing even to myself.
I intentionally left my children out of the conversation. I only wanted to create distance and quietly cut off whatever feelings he might’ve been holding onto for me.
Right after that, my phone buzzed inside my pocket. It was that driver calling.

Confused about why he’d call so late, I answered immediately.
The driver’s voice sounded slightly disoriented as he explained he’d arrived in Queen District but got lost because the navigation system led him the wrong way. He needed directions.
Not wanting Bella disturbed, I slipped outside into the empty corridor to continue the conversation.
The corridor stretched endlessly beneath harsh white lighting, heavy with the biting scent of disinfectant. Every now and then, a gust of cold air brushed against my skin, making me shiver.
I wrapped my arms around myself while patiently guiding him through the route.
As always, he spoke very little, quietly listening while I talked.
Then, I casually added, “Since you’re already here in Queen District, I can bring you the original invoice tomorrow.”
Unexpectedly, he turned it down at once. “There’s no need for that. It isn’t urgent.”
The response immediately stirred suspicion in my chest.
Back in Brinewick, he’d acted impatient about the matter, even warning me not to block his number. But now that he was nearby, he suddenly didn’t care about it anymore? The inconsistency felt strange.
After ending the call, I turned toward Bella’s room again. Suddenly, a sound rang out behind me.
It sounded like something had been kicked, frighteningly close to me.
At the same instant, a scent drifted through the icy air and wrapped around me without warning.
Fresh pine. Damp forest air. A trace of sandalwood…
Ethan.
Fear slammed into my chest so violently that my entire body tensed.
I turned around instantly, only to find an empty corridor washed in pale light and rows of tightly shut doors. No one was there.
The silence suddenly felt terrifying.
I didn’t dare remain there for another second. Lowering my head, I hurried away, my pace growing faster and faster until I was practically running.
But the moment I rounded the corner, too quickly to stop myself, I crashed straight into a solid chest.
