Chapter 343

Chapter 343:
I was afraid that if she learned the truth, she would hate me. Afraid that she would think I had taken advantage of her vulnerability. Afraid that the fragile thread connecting us after three painful years would snap completely the moment the truth came out.
Raising a hand, I pressed my fingers against my aching temple. The guilt gnawing at my conscience wrapped around me relentlessly, leaving me unable to find peace.
Countless times, I had imagined throwing caution to the wind and rushing to her to confess everything, to tell her that I was the “driver” who had been contacting her, that I had never once stopped loving her.
But every single time, fear stopped me.
Before long, Noah arrived from the airport with the real driver in tow, and I personally drove over to pick them up.
Before arranging for the driver to meet Lianne, I needed every detail perfected. There couldn’t be a single flaw.
Once they entered the car, Noah noticed the dark expression on my face and immediately volunteered to drive instead. Without a word, I moved into the passenger seat. Then I glanced coldly through the rearview mirror at the man sitting nervously in the back seat, Jon Boyd.
The moment Jon saw the Bentley and my sharply tailored suit, disbelief flashed across his face. Soon afterward, realization seemed to dawn on him. He rubbed his hands awkwardly before forcing out an ingratiating smile. “Sir, I’m really sorry if I offended you last time.”

I had no interest in meaningless conversation. My voice was icy when I replied, “When you meet her later, you’ll say exactly what I tell you to say.”
Jon nodded repeatedly. Then, after hesitating for a moment, he lowered his voice cautiously. “My daughter is seriously ill and urgently needs surgery. Could you possibly advance me a hundred thousand dollars?”
“Noah, give him five hundred thousand,” I said calmly.
Jon was shocked, immediately waving his hands frantically. “No, no, that’s far too much! I only need a hundred thousand—”
“Consider the rest payment for your time,” I interjected flatly, leaving no room for refusal. “As for how long I’ll need you to work for me, I don’t know yet.”
I genuinely didn’t know how long this absurd lie would continue. Nor did I know how long I would remain hidden in the shadows, silently watching over Lianne before finally forcing myself to let go of her.
The money wasn’t charity. It was payment for Jon’s silence and cooperation.
Briefly, I explained the events from last night, deliberately leaving out everything intimate. I only told him that I had found Lianne drunk outside the restroom, brought her to the hotel, and called a female friend to help change her clothes.
“Remember,” I instructed coldly, “act naturally. To you, this was simply helping someone in need. The less nervous you are, the less likely you’ll slip up.”
Jon listened with a bewildered expression before cautiously asking, “Is she the same woman from Brinewick last time?” He scratched his head awkwardly. “You really care about her. Did… did you fail to win her over?”
The moment those words landed, the atmosphere inside the car froze. In the driver’s seat, Noah stiffened, not daring to breathe.
