Chapter 399:
I leaned back in my chair, perfectly composed. “As for Nexith Group, there is a talent in that company I intend to secure. For that person, I would search through the entire industry if I had to. Acquiring one company is a small price to pay.”
A ripple of murmurs ran through the hall.
To the elders, who cared more about profit than anything else, spending billions to buy an entire company for the sake of one person sounded utterly unreasonable.
“Alpha, isn’t that going too far?” another elder asked, unwilling to let it go. “What kind of talent could possibly be worth using resources on that scale? We need a name and an area of expertise for the records.”
“The funds for Nexith Group came entirely from my personal account,” I said coldly as my eyes moved across the table. “Not one cent was taken from the pack. This acquisition has nothing to do with the pack’s expansion plans. It is my private investment. As for the person in question, just an assistant I’m used to having by my side. Nothing more.”
That ended the discussion. No one spoke about it again.
When the meeting ended, Noah and I left the hall together and headed back to Voss Group headquarters.
Inside the private elevator, the polished metal walls reflected my face. I looked a little tired.
“HR confirmed it,” Noah said from behind me, keeping his voice low. “Lianne joins the team tomorrow.”
He sighed and continued, “She did ask about resigning. But once she heard about the penalty clauses in her contract and the losses she’d have to compensate for, she went silent for a long time. Ethan, she’s probably at home cursing you right now.”
The elevator doors opened. I stepped out, then stopped abruptly.

My eyes darted to the office at the end of the hallway, the one I had already prepared for her. I stared at it for a moment, then asked, “Noah, do you think what I’ve done is despicable?”
I had never believed in abusing the advantages that came with being an Alpha. To me, the strong should earn loyalty through charisma and strength, not force.
Three years ago, I had wanted Lianne at Voss Group too. But back then, my plan had been different. I had intended for Noah to secretly train her, to help her grow strong enough to stand on her own, and then claim her place with her skills.
I wanted her to walk through those doors shining on her own. Not be dragged into the shadows by me.
But this time, I had ignored what she wanted completely. Contracts. Money. Power. I had used every one of them to trap her until there was nowhere left for her to run.
Noah was quiet for a beat, then let out a chuckle. “Alpha, since when did you grow so soft? You have more wealth and power than anyone else. If you won’t use them to get what you want or keep the person you want close to you, then what purpose do they serve?”
