Chapter 440:
“Trying to shift?” Ivy sneered. She crouched beside me and used the cold silver cane to tilt up my chin. Her eyes were filled with maniacal thrill. “Did you really think I’d allow that? This cane is coated with highly refined silver powder. As long as those wounds remain on your body, you’ll be nothing more than a pathetic mutt crawling at my feet.”
I bit down hard, and the taste of blood spread across my tongue.
This wasn’t the time to cling to my pride. Ruby and Tracy were with these people.
“Please… let them go.” My body trembled as I begged desperately. “They’re innocent, Ivy. I’m the one you hate. Take your anger out on me, but please spare Tracy and Ruby.”
“Innocent?” Ivy’s expression twisted as though I had just told the world’s funniest joke. She abruptly stood up and screamed hysterically, “Then what about me? I spent three whole years waiting for Ethan! I believed you were gone forever. I thought the path was finally clear for me to marry him! So tell me, why on earth did you have to return? Why return with your bastard child and seduce him all over again?”
She swung the cane furiously, smashing a wooden crate apart. The crack echoed through the room as fragments scattered everywhere.
“And you even gave birth to his child…” Ivy glared at me with pure hatred. “Lianne, you shameless slut. What gives you the right to have his love?”
Enduring the agonizing pain, I tried to think.
I had gone to great lengths to hide Ruby’s whereabouts. Even Ethan had only learned about her recently. So how had Ivy managed to find them so quickly?

Could it be that… someone had betrayed me?
A name suddenly came to my mind, sending a wave of cold dread through my body.
I didn’t want to believe it, but there was only one explanation.
“It was Brian, wasn’t it?” I asked, my voice tinged with despair.
Ivy paused for a second before bursting into shrill laughter.
With a smug expression, she immediately admitted it. “That’s right. It was Brian. He came to me willingly and gave me the perfect chance to kidnap them.”
She leaned closer and whispered with mockery, “But he’s quite the hopeless romantic. Before he left, he actually made me promise not to hurt you or that little girl. Such a fool. He clearly doesn’t understand women. Once a woman’s hatred reaches its peak, her promises mean nothing.”
I shut my eyes, feeling as though my heart had been ripped apart.
Brian, the man who had promised to protect me, had betrayed me. Just to have me, he had dragged me and my daughter into hell.
“You’re the pathetic one, Ivy.” I opened my eyes, looking at her with open scorn. “Do you really think Brian is helping you? You’re nothing but a tool to him. To him, you aren’t even worth the dirt beneath my feet. You’re just a crazy woman dancing to someone else’s tune.”
“Be quiet!” Ivy’s face twisted with fury as she slapped me viciously across the face.
The force snapped my head to the side. The corner of my lips split open, and blood trickled down my chin onto the floor.
