Chapter 453:
Lianne’s POV:
A thick, cold mist blanketed the Darkroot Forest, wrapping the ancient woodland in a damp, bone-chilling haze.
Eventually, Frank couldn’t stop me.
Without saying another word, he crouched down and carried me on his back. Two healers followed close behind us, both wearing solemn expressions.

“Stay with me, Lianne,” Frank whispered, his voice slightly shaky. He was terrified I would die before I got the chance to see Ethan.
The farther we went into the Darkroot Forest, the more suffocating the atmosphere became. A strange sense of dread hung heavy in the air.
Powerful Gamma warriors stood guard among the trees, their gazes sharp and cold.
They were the Thorn Pack’s deadliest fighters. But now they stood motionless at every checkpoint, like lifeless statues, forming a defense so impenetrable that not even a bird could pass unnoticed.
“The Thorn Pack has gathered all its elite warriors here,” Frank muttered, his voice filled with worry. “The elders have ordered a complete information lockdown. Trying to meet Ethan right now is impossible.”
Resting weakly against Frank’s back, I forced my blurry eyes to take in our surroundings.
I knew that inside this forbidden zone, surrounded by countless guards, Noah was my only chance.
At last, after much pleading and negotiation from Frank, we were allowed to meet Noah at a guard station near the outskirts of the Darkroot Forest.
He looked exhausted beyond words. Unshaven stubble covered his jaw, and his usually calm eyes were now clouded with complicated emotion.
“You shouldn’t have come,” Noah said, frowning deeply as he took in my battered, fragile condition. “The elders already know that everything started because of you. They want to tear you apart. If they find out you’re here…”
“Please… Noah.” My bandaged hand trembled as I reached out and grabbed the edge of his shirt. My voice had grown so hoarse it was almost unrecognizable. “Let me see him… just once. Even for a few seconds. I need to know how he’s doing.”
Maybe it was because he understood how deeply Ethan loved me, or maybe my miserable state finally moved him. Whatever the reason, Noah eventually gave in.
“Only you can go inside, and under no circumstances can the elders see you,” he said, his voice low but firm. He motioned for Frank to stay behind, then led me through layers of patrolling warriors, deeper into the heart of the Darkroot Forest.
That was the witches’ territory.
A strange herbal fragrance lingered in the air, mixed with a faint smell of sulfur.
With every step forward, the air grew heavier, harder to breathe.
Eventually, after passing through a thick wall of thorny bushes, I came to a halt, the sight before me rooting me to the spot.
At the center stood an enormous stone altar covered in mysterious symbols I couldn’t understand.
But Ethan was nowhere in sight. All I saw were witches in black robes gathered around the altar.
